Polvorones - Recipe anyone?
« on: December 12, 2006, 05:08:00 PM »
My dh brought home a half-full bag of these cinnamon-cookie type things from his work - apparently someone bought them in Gran Canaria & thought they might be good - but everyone (cleaners included) thought they were vile.  I tried one & seriously thought I died & went to heaven!

I'd LOVE to recreate it & I've searched online for recipes, but wondered if anyone had any good recipes on hand?  I'd love a cinnamon version - cinnamon is sooo underused in this country! ::)

I can give you a recipe for Cuban polvorones but they don't have any cinnamon.  Do you want it?

I made sweet potato mash last night and used a bit of cinnamon... funny thing is that the jar doesn't have the sprinkle top like some of the other spices. Good thing I had a look before I "sprinkled" it in.

Sure! Do you think I'd be able to improvise & add some cinnamon?  Are they a christmas cookie in Spanish speaking countries or are they for any time of the year?

I checked out Ebay & Lidl for them - but had no luck - so I'm keen for recipes! ;)

You can always add cinnamon to anything :D  Since 1959, Christmas was not celebrated in Cuba.  It was illegal at first and then the tradition just died off.  It's only in recent years that the government has publicly allowed and enouraged people to celebrate Christmas, specially Christmas Eve which seems to be the day most Hispanic people actually celebrate.  So, polvorones are not specifically Christmas cookies.  I remember we were given them during "merienda" (snack time between getting there and lunch and then between lunch and going home).  Some kids used to dunken them in water but that was just gross, I prefered milk :)  Here's the recipe:

Polvorones (Spanish Shorbread)
makes about 6 dozen

-16 tablespoons (2 sticks) plus about 2 teaspoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar plus more for rolling
- 2 1/2 cups flour (sift before measuring)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Cream the 2 sticks of butter with the sugar until is is lemon-colored.

2. Beat in the flour, salt, and vanilla, making a stiff dough.

3. Refrigerate until well chilled.

4. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.  Grease a cookie sheet with the remaining butter.

5. Roll the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter.  Place them on the cookie sheet and press them down a bit with the back of a spoon.

6. Bake them for about 14 minutes, until lightly golden.

7. As soon as you remove them from the oven, roll the polvorones in confectioners' sugar and set them on a wire rack.  When they are cool, roll them in sugar again.

8.  Serve at room temperature.

Enjoy!

THANK YOU!!! :D

I have to say that I lived in Miami for 21 years (I'm 32 now) and I have never had one of those til I the other day - in the Uk - go figure!

I really appreciate the recipe, too!

I'm curious....will this be your 1st Christmas in the Uk?  If so, I hope you enjoy it - I found it so different (but in a good way) compared to the US because people are generally off for the full week & the food & TV are FAB! If I could just get my family over each year, then I'd be set! Thanks again!

This will be my first Christmas in the UK indeed although the last time I was home for Christmas was 3 years ago.  this is my first Christmas in my own place where I get to decorate, cook, etc whatever I want.  It's great!  I'm having my in laws over for Christmas Eve and I'm making a big Cuban meal.  I hope you enjoy the polvorones!

Sparklyfairy, I'm curious to know if you ever made the polvorones.  I am making some today (the dough is chilling).  The dough was very dry and falling apart and I'm wondering if that is the same result you got.
