Crazy football question
« on: December 14, 2006, 02:56:41 PM »
Y'all are going to think I'm crazy...if you don't already.   My question is about the football pitch.  When looking at the grass (or turf.. or sod...not sure what it's called over there) from a small or great distance there seems to be like a tone on tone plaiding effect.  I've always wondered if it has any significance or if it's just the way the grass is mowed?

Grass is fine!

No, there is no significance, it's just groundsmen being flash and mowing the lines into pretty patterns!

I actually think that when they mow the grass in perpendicular lines, they do 6-yard lines. That way the third line is at the 18-yard line (for the 18-yard box). Also, the lines help linesmen judge offsides better. I have recently seen pitches mowed in a circular pattern, and that seems just to be showy, and i think they may stop that in order to help the refs with the offside.

No, that's not true.  It's just for decoration.  The lines in the pitch aren't particularly visible from pitchside, so the linesmen probably wouldn't be able to see them.

Good point. I stand corrected. They are pretty, though.
