Does anyone know how long home-made eggnog lasts?

Not long in my house!  ;)

I wouldn't have thought very long -- maybe 2-3 days tops?

Waitrose sells the stuff in a carton if you've got a Waitrose in your area.

Is that a plain eggnog, expat, or does it have alcohol in it?

It's plain at the one here!

So I'll be adding my own booze.

Cool.

Does anyone make their own? The recipe I'm going to use is this one, but if anyone else has a tried and true old favourite, I'd love to hear it!

(to serve 8 )

4 eggs, separated
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup rum
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups whisky
1 cup whipping cream
Ground nutmeg

Beat egg yolks with half of the sugar. Set aside.

Beat egg whites to soft peaks. Stir in the rest of the sugar.

Pour yolks into whites and stir slowly. Stir in rum slowly. Stir in milk slowly. Stir in whisky slowly. Stir in half the cream slowly.

Whip the rest of the cream and fold in slowly.

Serve with fresh ground nutmeg on top.

*****

I'm thinking of substituting brandy for the whisky.

I ventured out to the waitrose here last night after work.  Navigating an unknown area of town in the dark, I finally found it - What a pit!  It is in a dodgy part of town to begin with, but the store was awful!  And no eggnog.

I also bought a jar of roasted peppers and when i got home, opened the jar which was a little too easy.  The seal had been broken and the peppers were moldy.  Gross.

After hearing such good things about Waitrose, I'm apalled that the store here could be so bad.

But no eggnog.  Chary, thanks for the recipe.  I think we'll be making it this year.  Except I have to make it without the booze.  Any thoughts?

I'd add some extracts for flavouring -- rum, vanilla, almond? Even orange might be nice.

I made the eggnog recipe last night and it was delish! Just a tad too boozy for me (even for me!), though, so in the future I'd cut the whisky back a bit.

I'm in Texas and had some Silk soy eggnog.  Very tasty!  I admit I already went through both quarts I bought a week ago.

Thought I'd share my eggnog recipe which I'm making tomorrow.  It's so yummy but very potent

6 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup Rye Whiskey
1/4 cup of Brandy
1/3 cup rum
6 egg whites
2 cups heavy cream
2 1/2 cups of milk

Beat egg yolks til thick and lemon color. Greadually beat in sugar. Slowly add alcohol, cover and chill befor serviing.  Before serving add cream, milk and stiff egg whites. Serve with Nutmeg on top

This was my Grandma's  recipe and it's so good!

I wish I'd had your recipe in time, MEF! It sounds less potent than the recipe I had (booze to cream/milk ratio is lower) ... which tasted way too alcohol-y.

No reason you can't make another batch.  ;D
