French toast
« on: December 20, 2006, 04:58:40 PM »
I have been craving french toast for a while so we have decided to have a big "american" brunch on Christmas Day.  French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage.  All I have been able to find are fancy recipes and all I want is just simple frensh toast.  Anyone have a recipe they can share?  TIA

Isn't it bread dipped in a beaten egg mixture?  Egg...pinch of cinnamon?  I would recommend using Brioche for the bread, if you like it a little on the sweet side.

I haven't made it since I was in highschool, but I think that was all I used to do.

Your brunch sounds YUMMY!  Good luck!

My Momma makes the BEST french toast in the entire universe. She uses eggs, a touch of heavy whipping cream, vanilla, cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and then fries it in a pan with salted butter. Not the most healthy brunch food, but soo SOOOO delicious. Props to Momma!

Yes, I was going to say I add a splash of milk to the beaten eggs, and usually a dash of vanilla.  Think it's been ages since I've had French toast, but then DH doesn't really like American-style pancakes or French toast (with loads of syrup of course!).  When we're visiting the US, he complains when I insist upon going to IHOP -- but that's the only time I really splurge calories on pancakes, etc.

Carolyn, when we are in the US, my husband insists we go to IHOP!  LOL  If he had his way we'd be there every day!

For extra special french toast: whip egg whites separately, fold in with regular ingredients then pour into large baking dish. Cut brioche loaf into slices and dip both sides into mixture in dish. Place all slices in dish and set in fridge overnight. Take out in the morning, stick into pre-heated oven (~200) for 15-20 mins. Voila! Really, incredibly yummy. :D

We probably have French toast, eggs, and bacon for dinner at least once a month!  DH doesn't think anything like that should be breakfast food. No way he would eat it in the morning. Says it's too sweet for breakfast.  We always just do it plain and simple.  Dip bread in scrambled egg, butter gridle or skillet and cook away. We never did it fancy but I like everyone's ideas of putting a few spices or vanilla in it. Sounds really good!! Might try and sneak this one past dh!! :)

I always put a ton of cinnamon and vanilla in mine. I like it sweet.

And it has to have maple syrup and an obsene amount of butter.

Add some cardamom and ginger, too.  Makes it smell (and taste) fabulous.
