Where can I buy new power cords for desktop and monitor?
« on: December 28, 2006, 05:06:47 PM »
Hi!
I've read a ton of the forums on bringing my desktop + monitor and laptop, and now am sure I can confidently bring them to the UK! I just bought a new cord for my laptop (one that runs from the AC adapter to the wall) and am now trying to figure out what exactly I need for my desktop and monitor.

According to my monitor manual, I need "H03VVH2-F cord and plug rated 2.5 A, 250 V." I can't find this exact thing, but I'm wondering if this will do: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=1176&doy=28m12

Looks like the right female part, but it's rated 5A instead of 2.5A. Does that matter? Also, is this likely the cord I need to plug in my desktop?

If there's a better place to purchase these cords, I'd appreciate knowing that, too. I just bought the laptop cord from eBay, but I don't see these others available anywhere.

Thanks!
Kate

Definitely take your cord into a shop like Maplin, Currys or PC World and compare them with the cords they have on sale there. That's how I did it. But it really helps to have it physically with you instead of product codes and what you "think" it looks like from memory.

Hi Kate,

Quote
According to my monitor manual, I need "H03VVH2-F cord

That's just the European designation for the cord:

H = Harmonized CENELEC coding system
03 = Rated for 300 volts maximum
V = PVC-insulated conductors
V = PVC sheath
H2 = Combined construction
F = Fine-wire flexible

In plain English, that's pretty much just a standard PVC-insulated flexible line cord in Britain.

and plug rated 2.5 A, 250 V."

{.....}

Looks like the right female part, but it's rated 5A instead of 2.5A. Does that matter?
Not at all.  The current rating for a cord is the maximum that it can safely carry, so as long as the cord rating is the same or higher than that specified, it's suitable.

The cord in your Maplin link has the standard IEC female connector which will mate with the plug used on almost all modern desktop PCs and monitors, so yes, it's almost certainly the one you want.

Thank you so much! And I know just where the Maplin in Cambridge is, so hopefully I'll be up and running as soon as we get there!
