Crock pot meals?
« on: December 31, 2006, 03:55:51 PM »
My stupid oven is still broken and we have no idea when we'll get the part to fix it.  I'm running out of things to cook in the crock pot and am looking for some ideas.  Anybody have any good recipes?

Can't vouch for any of them but you might find something new in the 360. :)

One of my favourite meals, other than soup, is to take a whole chicken, pop a lemon and some garlic in the cavity, sprinkle outside with salt and pepper.

Peel some potatoes, cut up an onion and some carrots and put them in the bottom of the crock pot and put the chicken on top.   Add 1/4 cup white wine and the same of chicken stock, put the lid on and let cook all day.

Take out the veg and the chicken when cooked and put the juice in a pot.  Add a bit of flour mixed with cold water, and heat up until thickened to make the gravy.  Great easy meal.

I also do it with a beef brisket just replace liquid with red wine &/or beef stock.

We just had the ham I put in last night, with 3/4 cup brown sugar, some dry mustard and 1/4 cup of coke a cola. I soaked the ham during the day (cuts the saltyness), and dribbled a little coke into the brown sugar and mustard mix to make a paste. Score and rub the ham, stick in the crockpot, pour the coke in, and leave on low all night (8 hrs). The meat just falls apart when it's done. Our New Year's Eve dinner.

One easy meal that I always make is beef stew. It's lovely.

Take a pound or so of cubed stew meat and put it first in the cooker. Top it with about 10 or so baby new potatoes cubed into big chunks. More or less if you like...then put a bag of mixed veg (mine from Tesco) which has leeks, carrots and swede cubes. Top with a little bit of salt and pepper then a can of Campbells tomato soup and about 3/4 of a can of water. Put on high covered for about 7 hours. It's delicious.

I use this recipe for pot roast in the crockpot:

1 roast
1 packet of onion soup/dip mix
2 bullion cubes
4 cups of water
A few dashes of Worcestershire sauce

Put it all together and let it cook on Medium for several hours.  If you put veggies in, put them under the pot roast.  Happy eating!

One of my mom's old stand-bys:

2 lbs stew beef
1 cup dry red wine
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped onions
ΒΌ tsp pepper
1 can whole mushrooms

Place meat in crock pot.  Mix all other ingredients and pour over the meat.  Cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.

Thanks Q-G for posting that link, i knew i'd seen a thread on here somewhere, but couldn't find it.  All these receipes sound so yummy.  Thanks so much for everyone posting their favorites. It should keep me cooking for awhile!  I did try something new for Christmas dinner this year that i'd never done and it turned out yummy.

I took 2 turkey breasts, 1 large can of chicken stock, some fresh thyme, sage and rosemary and chucked it all in and let it cook on low for about 6 hours.  It was the best turkey we've ever had.  I swear I'll never cook an entire turkey again.  No waste and no bones to deal with.
