I still have the old Breville one that my parents gave me when I first went to uni, although I haven't used it in years. I keep it in the cupboard thinking it will come in handy one day.  Cheese and spinach with lots of black pepper were my favourite.  I never thought to use it for baking though!

The first one I had actually had recipes for baking.....and two notches, one kept it slightly open so the baked stuff could rise. The second one I had didn't have two notches, so I would prop it slightly open with the end of a knife.

We used to have one that we'd make little cheapo deserts in as a kid.  We'd take white bread, spread butter on one side of each piece and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.  Put the bread in and add some pie filling (apple, cherry whatever) then the other slice of bread.  Made great little mini-deserts for kids.  I've seen people use those for a quiche like thing with egss, milk, cheese and spinach and they always look yummy!

Why would anyone need a sandwich maker?  ??? They aren't exactly the most complicated thing to make.

It cooks both sides at the same time... it's just easier than using a regular pan. I specifically asked for one for christmas!

The kinds that are shaped like a sandwich aren't very good (in my experience they tend to burn the edges), the ones that either look like a grill or or are a flat panini maker are the best.

But hey, somebody must like them and use them for... something?

If it's the kind that shaped like a sandwich then I don't know what else you could use. If it's either the grill kind or the flat kind, you can always use it as an indoor grill or something.

I put one on our wedding list but we didn't get it.  :( But in a way that's probably good because our kitchen is already over-run with small appliances and gadgets!!

We have a sandwich maker but I don't like it.  In fact, I think of it as the sandwich shrinker.  Grilled cheese sandwiches come out like petit fours.

it might make a nice, big paperweight. :laughs:

we have one. got it at argos end of line sale ages ago for a fiver.

i used to like it.
now i hate it. anytime i suggest making toasted sandwiches, sean suggests we use it and i promptly shoot that idea down. i hate cleaning the thing!
