Thanks for reviving this thread. We're just getting ready to shop for shippers from US to UK. Here's another question: how big a container for a 4-bedroom houseful? That includes living room, dining room, kitchen table, porch furniture, and lots of sentimental crap!

When I moved, they sent people to come and look at all my stuff to give me the estimate. I had a couple of companies give estimates. I don't think you'll be the one who has to figure out whether you need a full container, half container, etc. Good luck to you!

Airmom, this link was given to me by another member for a company who does international moves via shipping container.  They have an estimator that you can use to get a preliminary idea of how much cubic space you will need.  I do think that they would have to visit for concrete space requirements.  BTW, this company seems to be highly regarded though I would always recommend verifying references and the UK equivalent of BBB for any issues.

Any ideas about whether it makes sense and/or is cost effective to start shipping boxes through the post office ahead of our move? I have friends who would be happy to hold our stuff for us until we arrive.

I am using UPakWeShip.  For me, it's $450 port to port for 1/2 pallet which is about 12 boxes (US copy paper size).  They offer door to door service for $850 also.  I'm not shipping any furniture, just boxes of stuff, dishes, shoes, Sons stuff.  They have crating services as well.  The lady has been extremely helpful and answered a million detailed questions for me.
I think it's cheaper for me because I live in a port city and we are shipping to Eccles with a holding location in Manchester.

Books are being shipped via M Bag at less than $40 per bag.

Just out of curiousity, do they reverse ship?  I see they give quotes in $$ but has anyone used them going back to the states?

Hi i was really impressed with your shipping technique from charleston and was wondering about employing a similar method from san francisco.  your container rates were excellent, which company did you use?
