Slow cooker alternative.
« on: January 08, 2007, 12:30:26 PM »
I've been wanting to make a specifc recipe for a while, the problem is it's a slow cooker receipe and I don't have a slow cooker.  I was going to buy one but now that we are moving back to the US, there is really no point in it.  So, is there any way I can adapt a slow cooker recipe for a stove?  I mean, will setting the heat really low be the same?  Any ideas?  TIA

It might be but I am pretty sure it's the heat and the moisture involved that do all of the cooking for you. A casserole dish meant for the oven with a top might work. My mother used to do that when I was a kid. Do you have anything like this?

I would imagine that would suffice. Google is a godsend so checking to see equivalents with oven temperatures and slow cookers would be on there I would imagine. I'll try and check for you as well

I've done slow cooks in the oven lots.   go generous on the liquid though.

I have an oven stew that is lovely.  I've let it go all day.    I also do beans in the oven - about 250F all day.

"Slow-cooker recipes often give cooking times that seem wildly inexact - advising for example to cook a dish "2 to 4 hours." This is because thermostats vary from cooker to cooker, and the moisture content of ingredients can be inconsistent. Also, because the temperature is so low, an hour of slow cooking is equivalent to only 5 to 10 minutes of conventional cooking time."

Hope this is of some help.
