whats the best way to transfer money??
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:51:22 PM »
We wont be pplying for our visa for hubby to come live here  for another year. In the mean time he wants to help support me financially ( up until now i have been adamant i can do it on my own - very stubborn) We looked at him making a monthly transfere from his bank tomine, but his military account would not let him do this.

Does anyone have any suggestions, through experience, how they went about this?

I use paypal, to send money both ways from my US account to my UK account, and visa versa although I had read a few posts of various people who have had problems but I haven't faced any yet and I have transferred 4 times with varying amounts.  I hope that helps.

Can he transfer his salary from his military account to a normal account in the US and have that bank transfer it to you? Or if he sends you a cheque in US$ you can bank it into your UK account but it may take a couple of weeks to clear.

I may do the paypal thing, and see if that works. What problems could i encounter with them if i do this regularly until he is back form deployment and we can sort this out properly. He does not have a cheque book.

I would advise against PayPal. I was the one that had a horrid experience. When my daughter was still in the US, I would transfer money from my UK account to my US account. She had my US account debit card. Just when we needed it most...for her visa...they froze my transfer. It took over two weeks to jump through all the hoops to unfreeze it. If he is stationed outside the US, he won't even be able to make the calls necessary to do it...has to be from your home phone listed on the account. If you NEED money this way sucks. I have gone to Western Union...which costs more...but can be done on the Internet...usually. Be careful not to exceed limits though...thank you Home Land Security.

See paypal hasn't worked for some but for others (like me) it has worked fine.  There is also a service called www.xe.com which I have heard good things about.

Good reading on XE trade here http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=24183.0

Also, good reading in the "money matters" board.

sorry i posted this here,i did not see the money matters board.

We wont be able to open an EX account as he wont be able to verify his detaisl by phone ect with him being deployed so that is out of the question for now, but something that willbe good in the future.

we are military stationed in the UK and we bank with USAA ... I opened a sterling account once we got here and have an allottment set up to transfer $150 to our sterling account each month ...

I don't understand why his bank or military account won't let him transfer money to your sterling account?

Here's a thought...it is what we did before the kids and I moved over here...but it was the other way around...his British account...me needing $ in America. He got an ATM/debit card for me and just left it. He wanted to know that if anything came up...like Emily needing meds or something...I wouldn't have to wait for a wire transfer...I could just get it. I suppose it could be abused...and requires some trust...but I always hate taking any help from anybody...even my husband. So for us it worked fine.

Thanks that seems like a good solution. Would i have to let the bank know, so if i used it here it would not seem like suspicous activity, me being in the UK, and him in the USA

I think that Paul let them know...so they weren't confused as to why there were withdrawals from both the UK and the US on the same day.

well after alot of emails back and forth (with hubby being deployed and the USAA system having errors) we now have a joint account with them, so hopefully i will have a debit card and cheques real soon.

We are going to set up an allotment from his bank to the USAA  account and i can withdraw cash from there. So thankyou for that info

With a USAA checking account do you know which ATMs i can use in the UK??
