UK Tax Return- Do I need to sign???
« on: January 09, 2007, 09:39:24 PM »
i need to get a new UK accountant.  this much i know and realize.  however for the first time in the UK I need to file self-assessment (transferred a large sum from US to UK and i'm assuming this triggered the inland revenue's letter to me asking me/telling me to do self-assessment).

i am only in the UK for the next 3 days.  i am then out of the country until 10-Feb-07.
my UK taxes are due by 31-Jan-07.
i have been trying to get in touch with my UK accountnat to ask them this since mid-Nov.  NO REPLY.

needless to say, i will be finding a more communicative accountant in the future, but for now i'm stuck with him.

my question to the accountant is this- and perhaps someone can answer- do I need to actually SIGN my UK taxes?  since i'm only in the UK for the next 3 days, and they haven't been prepared yet, this may present a problem.

also, i think I need to actually PAY by 31-Jan (assuming i owe the UK govt money).  can this be done by bank transfer?  does it need to be done by actual check?  this also could present a problem.

thanks.

Hi meggles

First thing - don't panic!

If you owe UK tax because you remitted money to the UK and the US tax paid is lower than the UK tax then all you have to RIGHT NOW is overpay the UK Revenue.

They can only charge interest from 31 January 2007 if you owe tax; so to give enough time to get this sorted without rushing because you will be away you can just estimate for now and get the paperwork sorted when you get back.

If you really don't have the time or money then get the paperwork sorted and tax paid by 28 February and you'll only owe £100 for filing late plus a months interest.
