I just practised with the hazard perception DVD one last time, and although I am passing their mock exams, I must admit I am frustrated by the subjectivity.
I've heard similar comments from others.  I wonder just what is expected.  Is the system geared toward the examinee spotting as many potential hazards as possible?  Is it done in such a way that it only expects the most obvious hazards to be selected?  If -- being an experienced driver -- you click on all the little extra hazards as well, does it penalize you because it thinks you're trying to be "too clever" by clicking away excessively?

I'm one of the millions who never had to undergo this test, but from what I've heard about it, it all seems very vague.

It wasn't fun, I'll tell you that! I keep thinking about people in their 60s or beyond who aren't comfortable using computers. How are they supposed to pass this?!? It would be nearly impossible. Something tells me the hazard portion of the test won't be around in 5 years. Or perhaps will exist, but in a different format (because we all know the DVLA is not going to want to give up the extra cash!).

I just practised with the hazard perception DVD one last time, and although I am passing their mock exams, I must admit I am frustrated by the subjectivity.

The hazard perception DVDs, however, are slightly different from the actual hazard test. I think it's something to do with the angle the segments are filmed at. Something like that. Anyway, the actual test is clearer and easier. So if you're passing the mock tests at home, you should do fine on the real test.

Actually, Courtney, aren't you done yet?? Did you pass?

Add me to the list I am studying for tmy theory as well and I am passing the mock tests and the hazard perception.  I am taking my theory test in the near future as I am ready to get that out of the way and then after all the driving junk is over I am on to studying for the "Life in the UK" test!  Yippy!!

I did pass! Thank god!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

The instructions tell you to click on ALL potential hazards, but when you do, you get the big red *X of death* and you get zero points for that clip. That happened on my first clip and I didn't think I was overclicking. At that point, I thought I was doomed! It was different from the test software in that the clips were slower, and it seemed a bit more sensitive to overclicking. I only clicked on the really obvious stuff after that and passed with a 54/75.

Now on to the next hurdle.....the PRACTICAL.  [smiley=help.gif] [smiley=end.gif]

Sounds horrible.  I bet most of us would fail.

Thank you! I haven't booked it yet. Hopefully in February.  :)

I've bookmarked it. Thank you!

I think most people pass it, but this is where the subjectivity comes in. What *YOU* think is a potential hazard, and what *I* think is potential could be completely different. But you can be penalized for being overly cautious because the computer thinks you are cheating.  It really comes down to judging which potential hazard becomes a developing hazard and holding your clicks for that. You cannot stop clicking on things once you have passed the obvious hazard either, since one clip of the 14 has 2 hazards, and you are expected to find both of them.

I'm glad that bit is over and I can say that if I had not practiced with this software, I would have failed. I really recommend some type to anyone who is going to take this exam.

Was the theory part really similiar to the software that the DSA sells?  I have the hazard preception and the theory DVD/CD-Rom and I have been studying at least an hour every night.

My driving instructor said that he thought all the DVLA decision-makers should be forced to take the test.  >:(

Absolutely!   Just like the people who design some of the crazy intersections we have should be forced to spend a whole day trying to navigate around them!    >:D

When you send in your passport, how long does it take to get back?  I hate sending them in.  Can you do it in person?

It took 3 weeks to get my passport back. I had to go into the Reading licence bureau  because if you are an American and  applying for your provisional licence (after your year is up) they have to sign your paperwork, Americans can't take it to the post office at all.
