More importantly, my car has a little light to tell you it's time for a service and I can't turn it off.

haha you just need to get a little thingamajig that plugs into your car (and a laptop I think?) and that will reset the service light :p

"Fault" code reader?

The service light is rude... MOT checks don't mistake it for the check engine light, do they?  I'd be beyond annoyed if my car failed because my husband did my oil change and couldn't turn off a light.

And on that note, WE BOUGHT A CAR!  And my husband kicked us off by declaring today my day with the new car.  I'm about to get out of my jammies and go to Aldi early-ish on a Monday to see if checking out is any less annoying than on a Saturday afternoon.  Then I'm going to see if our Co-op is still open and buy a too-expensive contact lens case because I don't have a clean one and I have to wear my contavts again now that I'm driving.  Then I'll bring some bottles to the glass recycling collection point (glass is the one thing my council don't collect from curbside).

My husband suggested I could take myself to the beach, but then we thought about my phone not having a dash mount so I couldn't use Waze, and I wouldn't want to try to get there without satnav since we've only been down there a handful of times since we bought our house.  So I'll probably skip that.  This week.  Maybe I'll go next week.

Yay!  I have a car!  I can do things all by myself like a grown up!

Oh.  It's a red 2009 Fiat Panda Active Eco, 54k miles, photos to follow when I get to a place with an acceptable backdrop.

Enjoy your independence ️ we have to recycle glass on our own too, but there's a collection in Sainsbury's. Go visit your GP office if you have the energy! ;)

I'll drive by it.  If there's room to park in their very small car park, I'll pop in.  If I have to park across the road, I'll see how I feel when I get there.  :P

Totally why I put the qualifier in there! *sigh*

Independence is great but I get wiped out easily running errands. I can at least walk without crutches again after a really rough weekend.

Congrats on the car!  When you do get some courage, you've got to explore the beaches.

You should look into getting a GPS as soon as you can.  Trying to navigate at the same time as driving is really difficult when you are alone and can lead to accidents.  My personal solution is an aftermarket stereo with apple car play.  That works for me since it has a big screen with directions and maps.  I guess a small stand alone GPS would work just as well.

You do know that every bottle of solution comes with a contact lens case?  Another tip: Buy contacts online and save a ton.

I do buy my contacts online... I never by them from the optician shop.  I get 30 night/day wear contacts... the disposables you can sleep in.  I usually take them out every few days to give my eye a break and to clean them, even though I'm not supposed to need to.  But since I haven't been driving, I haven't needed to worry about it.  Until now, I've just used a contact for a few days, then thrown it away.  I am on my third box (of 6) in 4 years.  And since I'm not cleaning them, I don't have any solution... :P  I do have some saline ("rewetting drops" for rinsing off the stuff they're packed in when you open the new one.  But that's not going to clean them.

I had a small, cheap TomTom in the US.  I had a love-hate relationship with her, but I miss the hell out of her now.  She didn't like it when I deviated from her instructions, and I thought she was a heartless machine when she'd lecture me to turn around when possible when I needed to stop to use the toilet or eat.  But I got so accustomed to glancing at the screen to see what shape the road was going to take on the other side of a hill or around a bin. I like that little heads-up so I know if I really need to slow down, or just kind of ease off the accelerator.  So, yeah... I'll get something.  Either a mount for my phone so I can do Waze, or I'll get a proper standalone one.  And I'll get it soon.  I missed the turn to get to my GPs surgery, and then couldn't be bothered to try to find it, so I did a bunch of other errands instead.  I'll sort my referral out next week. :P

I'd use your phone.  Much cheaper and easier to keep up to date.

Ugh, the "recalculating" annoyance voice!

Yeah, I prefer phone.  I just am super paranoid because I'm in that 6-points new driver time, and I don't want my phone use to be misconstrued.  It would suck to lose my license almost as soon as I started using it.

The only downside with Car play is that you can't use Waze, or Google maps.  Both are far superior to the Spawn of Satan known as Apple Maps.

I'm no optician, but I've had contact lenses for more than 30 years and have done every stupid thing you can imagine with them (Okay, Sirius, feel free to write this on your whiteboard and quote it back to me next time I post about Brexit.  Just make sure you get it right or I'm going to have to get the moderators to smite you again)  and I would very much avoid leaving lenses in overnight.  Every optician I've ever had tells me not do it no matter what.  I've got two corneal ulcers to back me up.  One corneal ulcer involved taking tissue samples from my eyeball with a metal pick while I was using it (the eyeball).  Please take this contacts out every night!

My ex-husband would wear a pair of one day disposable lenses for a year.  Not exaggerating.  I wonder if he's blind yet....

Jimbo,
They make lenses specifically for leaving in all the time. It's a different substance than what your lenses are made from, they allow a LOT more oxygen through.

You shouldn't leave lenses in that aren't made to do that though.

These are for 30 days of continuous wear.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.
