I only know how to do the standard stitch to make a scarf... So this will either go well or terribly.... Hahahaha.

At least you have the start of a cool hobby!

Maybe... Finding cool yarn here isn't the easiest. Most of what I've seen is terribly boring!! But I have hopes again for finding cool yarn! I paid £17 for two smallish skeins though...
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Between youtube and Ravelry, you'll be knitting in no time!  :)

It's so amazing how we can learn things right in front of our computer these days. Very convenient but at the same I kind of miss the camaraderie of being with others in a class. Tell me, what is this Ravelry?  :)

Make sure you share a picture of the finished product!  ;)

A website with loads and loads and loads of patterns for knitting and crochet.

Some you have to pay for, but tons of them are free.  Absolutely love it!

ETA Apparently they also have spinning and weaving patterns. I didn't know that!

You can make a pretty nice hat with standard stitches! You might just want to practice casting on/off stitches depending on the pattern you use. Crochet is my preferred yarn working method because I'm so slow at knitting. But one day maybe I'll get better at it. My aunt can knit a baby blanket in a day!

As well as the patterns, there are groups which are like mini forums where you can ask questions. And Lyonaria, all the yarn is catalogued there too. It's a fantastic resource.  :)

I technically know how to go down a stitch on the one I know, you just put two stitches through on one... I've accidentally added stiches somehow! Hahaha. I can knit a large needle, fluffy scarf that's 8 feet long in a few hours. 😁

It does! They have a really good search function so you'll find yarns that you never knew of before and it'll tell you right there where to get them.
Although sadly, most of the best yarns come from the US and Canada. There are a few nice UK indy yarn companies though.

You can also display your work and see what everyone else has done.  :)

When actually working I'd be paying a lot more on income based repayment plans. If I end up having to apply for social security disability that's a different story, but I know I *can* work... I just need a team that doesn't sit around people wearing gallons of scent and the ability to work remotely in case the environment is bad, and when there are deadlines to meet I am not really able to sit in an office for extended hours, my joints can't take it. But I am not really an expert in anything, I'm nothing special - just a run of the mill employee who does a good job. I was an expert in US mortgage data and that's next to useless over here. There is a data science career fair in London tomorrow so my husband agreed to come to that with me and make a day of it. Maybe I will get lucky!

Best of luck with it!

Just remember, you can change plans, so if you need to go on an income-based plan, you can later change to a regular one if things improve later. Just something to have in mind, in case you can't find work for an extended period of time. [And your payment is usually based on your AGI.]

Yarn. If in Glasgow, there's Yarn Cake.

The Daughter has been knitting for years, has tons of patterns off of Ravelry. Says it relaxes her. Is also really handy, living here, to be able to whup out a sweater in spare time in a couple of weeks!

Maybe we should revive the UKY knitting circle! A new thread in chit chat would probably work, since the previous one was to survive the visa waits. :)

The cool yarn, I believe it's French?

I don't know if this link will work for you unless you join but yes, it's there and it's  Bergère de France. And there are loads of different types.  :)

That's a lot, but very pretty yarn. Daughter says try woolwarehouse.co.uk  as that's where she gets her "everyday" stuff. Good sales.

[Edit - she loves, just LOVES something called "Wool of the Andes", if that is of any help. From knitpicks.com -   https://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Wool_of_the_Andes_Worsted_Yarn__D5420103.html  ]
