Friyay!

3.  Have had a horrific cold this week. After having been inside for a year, I am feeling it bad!  Not sleeping well and sound awful.  No idea where I caught it as kids are right as rain.  Maybe my immune system was weakened with the jab?  Who knows!

4.  So happy for a 3 day weekend!  Absolutely ZERO plans and I’m not complaining.

5.  My check engine light came on in my car this week. A trip to the garage confirmed as it hadn’t been driven (really) for a year, it needed “clearing”. At least the bill wasn’t awful.

Could well be - the Daughter has had a chesty cold for a while now that started soon after her second vaccine dose. (If it's not better by next week she'll see the medics.)

Can you explain what "needed clearing" means? I'm curious. Check Engine lights are coronary-inducing sometimes....

A filter was blocked (likely because it’s a diesel).

Well thank goodness it was something simple!   ;D

I was told by old-timers that a car that sits unused for a long time can have quirky issues when asked to be back in service again. Sediment settles in the gas tank (including rust, if any) and gets sucked up into the filters and fuel pump. Gaskets that are normally a little bit pliant are stiff.  Stuff like that.  I can believe that. I was once given a car that had belonged to an elderly person who no longer needed it. It hadn't been driven in well over six months, and rarely even before that. It was an older car as well - at least fifteen years old. It was one of those behemoths they made in the sixties that just guzzled fuel and had so much chrome on it that it could easily have been seen from space on a sunny day. That thing nickel and dimed me to death, having to replace bits and bobs on it! And with the commute I had I really couldn't afford the gas for it. I started parking it on the street at night, unlocked, hoping someone would steal it so I could get the insurance money for it, but, alas, nobody did.  ;)  I eventually did find a guy who wanted to buy it, but it took a while. At least I got enough for it to compensate for the parts and labor I had to put into it in the few months I had it.

Glad yours was just a filter!

I saw that on the news about your snow, PB.  I don't remember it snowing in May there while we were in-country. Am I mis-remembering, or is this a freak weather event?

My 5:

1) The Daughter was rumpling around in the kitchen quite late last night, baking a cake for me. I went out to check the status this morning, and because I would like nothing better than a slice of cake for breakfast with my tea, but the cake seems to be very firmly stuck in the Nordicware fluted pan she used. https://startpage.com/av/proxy-image?piurl=https%3A%2F%2Fencrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3AANd9GcS-Af4cE2npAzjAE9ZcDXsuuZ2sycopvruRldMr_OKjzgsuJRs%26s&sp=1620392308Tafe8811e1203da9167d1e601efd023892b4cc68b5e3ed739e74f59473f37988c She'll be unhappy when she wakes up and can't get that cake out of the pan. I think that recipe probably needed for the pan to be buttered and floured. I know she buttered it (found the butter wrapper) but I doubt she'd have known to have floured it. I'm sure it will taste great, but she's so into the presentation aspect that if it doesn't look right she'll be unhappy. I think it's rather sweet that she baked me a cake at all, though.

2) Finally got back out to the garden yesterday (it's been raining all week). They had announced that a large load of composted cow manure had been dropped by the barn, but by the time I got out there it was pretty much all gone. (Apparently most of the community shovels have gone AWOL as well.) So while we were out I checked in a nearby garden center and they were having a sale on composted, dried cow manure. I picked up a few bags and was able to put a light layer on the two beds that are not currently planted. They will have tomatoes and peppers, eventually. I was kind of leery about messing with really waterlogged soil (as a lot of the area out there in the allotment overall seemed to be really squishy), but I took the turning fork and checked to see the status. In most of the two beds I could push the fork all the way in and wiggle it around a bit with no issues. At the northern four feet of one of the beds I got the sound of vaccum-in-water - a kind of nasty schluuurrrrp sound - when I put the fork all the way down and moved it a bit. So I know which end of the garden is the soggiest. It's on a slope, and the plot next to ours is down-slope. They have dug a ditch along their side of the fence. It's got standing water in it. So I can approximate where the water is running through under the surface of our soil. I think instead of putting peppers there I might save it for the squash.

3) It's blue skies and forecast to be in the 60sF today. I would very much like to take a good walk this afternoon. I actually found a straw hat that fits so I can avoid part-in-my-hair-sunburn.  ;D

4) We are going to Pizza Hut (they actually still have an old-style hut here) if it's not crowded to celebrate my birthday today. We had thought about going to the steak place (which we might do if the Hut is crowded) as they have an early-bird special but I kinda want to go somewhere from "BC" - someplace that hasn't changed in 10 years. And that has Pac-man machines.

5) The Daughter has had a nibble from a government job in her field. The catch is that it is in New Mexico. I guess if she is offered the position and takes it she'll go out there on her own to try it out. I like New Mexico quite a bit, but I'm not going to move again unless she has a good job there (not a temporary one) and she intends to stay in for a few years.  If it looks like she'll be bouncing around jobs for a while, to build up her career, I will probably stay here. I guess I could go back to Scotland, though, if she's not going to be "home" very much... [Need to check the status of the Scottish elections from yesterday. Last I saw the vote count wasn't in yet.]

Happy Friday!

Ooh, have fun with the cookery class, PB!  And good luck in all your other endeavours.  If you are feeling discouraged with the baking, for whatever reason, ask me for a picture of the travesty that was Domo's birthday cake from December.  My husband still lets me know that I let Domo down.  :/

My five (I'm pretty sure I have five...)

1.  I'm sat in the sunshine in my  garden, just finished with steak-'n-cheddar wraps, enjoying the day while my husband tends to the Ooni in which he is attempting to smoke a pork shoulder for pulled pork later.

2.  Meanwhile, I have donut dough resting, and I'm about to go roll it out and cut it so we can have cider and donuts while waiting for the pulled pork.

3.  My husband is only 5 feet away from me right now (!!!).

4.  After finally getting the new roof on our workshop, my husband did a deep clean and got it all organized, and after the dust settled, we spent a couple of days out there *together* this week.

5.  On Monday, he has to go to the office to collect a laptop.  The contamination clock will reset, and I will have to stay distanced from him for another two weeks, but... He will finally be working from home, so maybe less uncertainty for a while!

Nan, Crazy cold weather! Freak weather!
I'm sure Scotland will welcome you back Nan! The full election results won't be in until tomorrow night.

JFKimberly, that's fun about the pulled pork and the fact that your husband gets to finally work from home! (This is crazy that it's now!, but at least it's happening!)

KFDancer, congratulations on the job!!!

Pizza Hut was only open for delivery and take out yet. But it looks promising in there for "some day". I didn't want to take a chance on a steak place we'd never been to, so we ended up going to Kuma Ani in Albany proper. Very, very nice, not a bad drive. Dim Sum (fried) followed by a bowl of Gyu. Couldn't finish it (too much in the bowl for me to eat!) I'd had the Tori the last time we were in, so I wanted to try something different. Daughter got a "build your own" bowl, and remembered to ask for a "1" on the spicy level (it goes 0 - 5, and I don't know if one could survive 5). Last time she'd asked for a "2" spicy and  spent most of the meal with her eyes watering. She said a "1" was just fine.

Then we went and walked a couple of miles in the mall. Very few people in there today. I would imagine it will be packed this weekend, though. It's a huge, 3 level mall. So many sales, too. Unfortunately, I don't need anything. But the walk was nice. After that we came home and had slices of the cake - lemon angel food - with a cup of tea. It was really very, very good. It just required being slammed down on the counter to get it out of the pan.  ;)
