1.  snowing here, and looks like it's meant to continue through the weekend.
2.  Tesco had 2kg bags of potatoes for 15p.  So after several days of jacket potatoes for me, and boiled spuds in the dogs dinners, I've used up the last of them in a potato & ham soup today.
3.  Dry January is going well... i know it's only the 9th, but i've attempted this in the past and never got past the 5th or 6th, so I'm pleased.
4.  Nothing much planned for this weekend.  Assuming the roads are ok, i might go to Farmfoods (nearest one is in Larkhall, 20-ish miles away) to stock up the freezer.
5.  Just had a message from my sister in Amarillo with an update on my 84-year old parents (they're not doing well). So thankful my sister is there looking out for them, as there's nothing i can really do from here.  :\\\'(

Sorry to hear about your parents, it's really tough being so far away.  We went through a similar thing with our parents who were living in England while we were living in Texas. Unfortunately for us it was just before we retired so couldn't spend nearly as much time visiting as we would have liked to.

So sorry to hear about your folks.  While I was not close to mine, it was still tough enough knowing I'd never see them again.  We'll say a prayer and light a candle that it goes well in Amarillo.

Mostly health rated this week.

1.On Wednesday I had a telephone appointment with my consultant to review the findings of the MRI on my left knee. Badly torn cartilage and mild arthritis on the inside of the knee. Discussed various options and I opted for a partial knee replacement.

2. Phone call today from the hospital and we agreed a surgery date of February 2nd, with pre-admission checkup and tests on the 21st of this month. My daughter will drive me in and pick me up, although she wasn't best pleased to hear that I am first on the list and need to be there by 7:30am. (It's a 25 minute drive at that time of day) Good timing as the policy renewal date is Feb 7th and I have already used my £500 deductible for the year. This is similar to what happened in 2021 with my other knee, surgery a few days before the policy expired.

Yikes, that's close timing.  Hope it all works out well!

Smart thought, dropping the dental. Unfortunately that's the only insurance my prior employer pays for (and is the least costly, of course) as far as health-related coverage goes as part of my pension package. I am wincing at the thought of what private insurance would cost me in the EU. (Don't want to look at that yet. Still dealing with the fact that I will never be able to get a mortgage. And the fact that as of Jan 1st France has tightened up visa restrictions to a mid-level French fluency from basic comprehension for US citizens, and stopped their government-sponsored language classes. Fingers are still crossed that the EU dependent route could still be open, with no language requirements there.)

It's been a tough winter here, too. Except the last few days - we just got back in from Ithaca. Fought a massive headwind and cold all the way out there, only to have it turn from the upper 20sF to 49F by the time we arrived. It had been dry enough long enough, though, that the interstate was clear and dry the whole way. Saw some lorries off the side of the road, from the wind, though.  We are expecting, in the next few hours, an ice storm and it's back to winter again.

It's still Friday here - in my head. SO

1) I took the daughter out for a curry for a belated birthday treat today. (We were in Ithaca wondering if the emotional support guinea pig was going to die or not on her birthday).  They make a nice red curry there that she likes. The pigster is ok. Benign growth.

2) It's proper winter here again. I think we've had two inches so far, and it started out as the nice fluffy kind. Unfortunately, that didn't last. But we have all the devices charged up and plenty of batteries, etc., and I've got my Ham radio if needed. Plenty of food in the house. But I don't think it's going to be that awful, other than wet snow weighs down power lines and tree branches.  Next week is to be bitterly cold though.

3) So it looks like Belgium is also an option for relocation. More people there speak English, apparently, and it'd be easier for the daughter to find a job there.  Assuming the USA is not at war with the EU by then. (OMG, it just keeps getting worse.)

4) The daughter is thinking of taking a beekeeping course. Since she's going to be basically indoors until spring, an online class seems like a good idea to me. If she likes it, she can take the followup course and get state-certified.

5) I am doing my best to keep a level perspective, but everything I am seeing says "run away, run away". Which is not feasible right now. It's still 289 days until the mid-terms, and I don't expect all that to go smoothly.  I am half thinking I'll be an enemy alien if I stay here, and if I nick off to the EU I'd be an enemy alien there. Possibly without access to my income.  There doesn't seem to be a right decision on this, at present, other than to hunker down. I am so, so tired.

Sunday here but here is my five for the week.

1 Last Sunday, like today, we will be walking down the town meeting the children on the way and having breakfast at a coffee shop.  It’s a tradition we started a few years ago after daughter moved back from LA. I buy breakfast for everyone that turns up on a Sunday including any visitors we or the kids have staying with them.

2 On Monday I paid my UK taxes online. I always do our UK taxes well before the end of the year but the balancing payment plus the first of the 2 estimated payments for the coming tax year are not due until end of January.

3 On Wednesday a salesman spent a couple of hours measuring up and giving us a quote. We are having all the windows and external doors replaced and had had a couple of companies quote for us. We have chosen a local company, recommended by our son, and now we look forward to having that work scheduled and finished.

4 On Tuesday measured up all our internal doors downstairs (8 of them) and we walked to our local big hardware store where we had bought our kitchen to give them the dimensions and pick out the doors and hardware. A local carpenter, also recommended by our son, will be fitting them in a couple of weeks. Tuesday is also the day we meet up with some friends for coffee every week.

5 On Friday a surveyor came out at 8:30 and spent the morning doing very detailed measurements etc, ready for our new windows. No idea yet when the work will be done but we have paid a deposit and the ordering and making of the windows will now be done.

I still find it extremely hard to believe that the USA is threatening to invade Greenland (Denmark, a NATO ally). “We can do this the hard way or the easy way”. I know Trump gets the blame for everything but he was voted in along with all his sycophants by the American people and it is the American people that can stop him. It’s unbelievable that the USA is threatening to go to war with a NATO country and/or crash the global economy with a trade war by imposing tariffs on all countries that don’t support the US acquisition of Greenland. Europe mostly held off retaliatory tariffs during his last round but they won’t stand for it this time and may even ban some companies from doing business in Europe. Just like dealing with Russia it is the oligarchs running the USA that need to be punished.

This is going to be long, but I'm in need of venting so you'll have to excuse me (and this is not aimed any anyone in particular):

Only 65% of eligible voters took the trouble to vote in the last USA presidential election. Slightly less than half of  those who voted chose Trump and his pack (so, about 30-33% of eligible voters chose Trump). If those who voted for someone other than Kamala Harris had voted for Kamala Harris none of this would be happening.  Aside from, potentially, another Jan 6 insurrection attempt.  But Trump was declared the winner.  The rest of us are being dragged along kicking and screaming, including the 35% who didn't vote at all for whatever reason and who I don't want to hear complaints from, not one single word.  There are days I really hate this system of government (a lot of them, lately) and pine for proportional representation. But it is what it is.

As I understand it, a lot of people no longer read newspapers or watch traditional news broadcasts - but then again, since only a handful of people own/control those sources their credibility (ala CBS) is seriously in doubt. Especially when you check into who owns them. And, sadly, a good portion of the general public wouldn't understand what's going on if they did read it/hear about it, in the broader sense.  As far as I can tell, more people now get their info from social media than traditional sources. If they're on Blue it leans left (anti-Trump). If they're on X it leans way to the right (Trump). If it's on Facebook it's interspersed with conspiracy theories about chemtrails and cookie recipes. Then there's Instagram and Reddit and all the others. (I try to keep up a little with what's going on those, but there are too many.)  There are, of course, all the alternate "news" sources that are extreme beyond words, on both ends and throughout the spectrum.  For the typical Joe, that makes it really hard to know what to believe.

And now there's AI generated BS mixed in.

I have several friends who are my age and older who say they "don't want to even talk about what's going on and are just waiting until it's over."  My eyebrow cannot raise much farther without becoming one with my hairline when they do, but when I ask them who the hell is going to fix it, they just change the subject. One, at least, was able to say that she didn't want to discuss anything via email because it could come back to bite her later on. (Ok, she gets it.) And that she was just going to duck and cover.

My relative,  Uber Boomer, who initially pegged this all as the usual grifter-gets-power scenario now says Trump won't try to invade Greenland - it's all a ruse to take attention away from the Epstein files. None of which have been released since Dec 23, by the way, although the deadline was Dec. 19th.  He may be right - the polls are massively against touching any part of Greenland militarily (one poll is 96% strongly against) and it seems the only thing Trump's still sensitive to are the polls - and being called a pedo protector. But with Miller whispering in his ear, it's a crap-shoot.

I moved much of my 403b into overseas investments funds - primarily holdings in the EU/UK. I really don't want to see a trade war with the EU - or anyone else. But if that idiot continues, I hope the EU, et.al., punch back just as hard as they can.  Financially nuke him, if possible. Don't just match his actions, double them in return. It'll hurt like hell, but if it gets him gone it'd be a small price to pay.  My last hope, other than that the EU  actually follows through instead of just talking about it forever, is that the Supreme Court will issue their pending ruling about Trump's tariffs and that they will be ruled unconstitutional. [I'm not holding my breath on that, but it's a glimmer of a chance.] I don't know that even the Supreme Court could stop him, but it would be the last legal way of which I'm aware.

As to the American people stopping Trump from doing anything: pray tell, how?  "Do something!" - Again, what?

Trump's party (backed by, what, 30%-ish of eligible voters) controls the Congress. Unless/until they no longer control the Congress there's not going to be a legislative way to stop them. If there actually still is one. That party also controls the Justice Department, which prosecutes law breakers. They are currently afoul of the Epstein Files law and are now arguing that the courts have no authority to force them to release documents. They've stopped criminal investigations on Trump cronies and are going after political opponents. So you think the FBI or DOJ are going to do anything to remove Trump?  And the court system? The administration (including DHS and ICE/Border Patrol) appear to be ignoring or trying to circumvent the orders of various courts. I would not be surprised if, at some point very soon, they just state that the court system is unsound and they're not going to listen to it.

The Executive Office also controls the military - at least in the short term. Congress controls it, theoretically, in the long term. (Loop back to who controls Congress here.)  I keep hearing people spouting off about "soldiers should not follow illegal orders" but when the laws are changed to make things legal, what are they going go do? [Sieg Heil!] Aside from one-on-one illegalities, such as personally participating in genocide, plundering, etc., it's my understanding that the "don't follow illegal orders" does not pertain to policy-wide decisions. That is, if they're ordered to invade Canada, they'll invade Canada. If they're ordered to take granny out from the nursing home and shoot her, they could claim it's an illegal order and not do it. But there will always be one dumbf*ck in the group who will shoot her. [Not everyone in any military is a "nice guy".]  Trump has fired the top brass in the military who didn't pass his vetting and replaced them with his minions. He's building ICE into an entity very similar to the Gestapo - it's my understanding that the budget for ICE is now larger than the military budget for most countries. This country's population is technically armed to the teeth privately, but my suspicion is that it's not spread evenly across the political spectrum as to who owns the guns. It's starting to look like that's going to have to end up the deciding factor though. Then everybody loses.

We'll find out in about 300 days.  In the meantime, if you've got a fix for this whole thing that'd work, I can tell you where to find several million people who want to hear it.

Nice vent, very understandable.

As you say, it is the fault of the American people for voting him and his henchmen into office the first time (including all those who didn’t vote). If history doesn’t repeat then it rhymes. When the people of Germany voted Hitler into office in 1933 they let a genie out of the bottle that they couldn’t get back in, I just hope the USA can right this ship before it goes down.

In the past I would have said it's a great thing that he's old and in obviously bad health, and that there's a good chance he'll drop dead in the next few years. Unfortunately, that won't really matter because he's just the figurehead. The organization would remain, and would push Vance into the figurehead role. So, 300 days. I've always been a bit of an alarmist, but I think it's warranted this time. If the House and Senate do not turn over in the mid-terms, I see little hope for the future here. In any event, this country will never be the same as it was, for good or bad.

As to the first time Trump was in power (2016):  There was a turnout of about 60% of eligible voters. Of that number, Trump received approximately 46.2% of the popular vote. The US does not have a direct-vote system, it uses the Electoral College system.*   Trump won 304 electoral votes, while Hillary Clinton received about 48.2% of the popular vote and 227 electoral votes.  "On election day, Trump over-performed his polls, winning several key swing states to achieve a majority in the Electoral College while losing the nationwide popular vote by 2.87 million votes."

*The system calls for the creation, every four years, of a temporary group of electors equal to the total number of representatives in Congress. Technically, it is these electors, and not the American people, who vote for the president. In modern elections, the first candidate to get 270 of the 538 total electoral votes wins the White House.  The Electoral College was never intended to be the “perfect” system for picking the president, says George Edwards III, emeritus political science professor at Texas A&M University.  “It wasn’t like the Founders said, ‘Hey, what a great idea! This is the preferred way to select the chief executive, period,’” says Edwards. “They were tired, impatient, frustrated. They cobbled together this plan because they couldn’t agree on anything else.” - https://www.history.com/articles/electoral-college-founding-fathers-constitutional-convention

Another Friday is upon us. Let me see, what has been going on…

1. A good afternoon at the pub last Sunday with my brother-in-law and other friends. No pub this Sunday as he will be staying within 6’ of a toilet while doing his prep for a colonoscopy on Monday morning for which I will be driving him to and from the hospital.

2. On Tuesday I met up with my usual group of folks down the coffee shop. My wife and daughter went off on a guided hike that morning following a seaside route a few miles from where we live. One of these friends in the coffee shop lived in Austin, Texas for over 20 years and like us signed for private health insurance when he moved back here because it is a trivial amount compared to what we were used to paying in the USA. My renewal date is Feb 7th and it will be £88/month with a £500 deductible.

3. While my son was at work I met the guys replacing his roof, letting them inside to insulate his loft and roof space. It definitely needed doing and they used a full 3 rolls of thick fiberglass insulation. The weather was very dry and they cracked on and replaced his roof within 2 days. I got a text from my son today to say that the guy had been out to replace his solar panels so that big job is now done and dusted. He should be good for another 50 years, which is how old the existing roof had been.

4. I went into hospital for my pre-admission exam in readiness for my partial knee replacement on Feb 2nd. All good so far. I learned that it will be an overnight stay even though I am first on the list and the surgery should only be 1.5 hours. This is because the epidural they use won’t have worn off so I will have an overnight stay and have my first physiotherapy session before I can be released. I’ll also have to demonstrate I can walk up and down some stairs prior to release.

5. We had our oldest friends over for dinner on Thursday night. They were our neighbors opposite when we first moved into this town in 1979 and we have remained in close contact for the 47 years or so since then. They still live in the same house. When we moved back here in 2017 the house we bought is about 2 minutes walk from where we used to live. They are now in their early 80’s, about 12 years older than us and still very active. This August will be their 60th wedding anniversary and our 50th.

Sounds like a good week for you, Durhamlad. [Sympathy to your BIL. Colonoscopy prep is not fun!] Sounds like a good time was had by everyone out-and-about. Overnight only at the hospital? Wow. (I can see why they'd keep you - I remember my epidural and it took a very long time to wear off.)

Friday here, too, and I actually remembered it while it IS Friday.

1)  Just hauled an overdue load of laundry down two flights to the laundry room. I have six bucks left on my laundry card, and still have two loads (my fuzzy bathrobe and some sweatshirts, and some sheets/pillowcases/towels) left to do. Unfortunately, the machine costs $2.25 per load, and the same for drying, so the rest is going to have to wait until it's warm enough to go over to the complex's main office where the payment card refill machine is. It's just too cold to do that this morning, for me. The Daughter is logged in and working, so she can't go.  Eh, I have spares. (I miss having my own washer and dryer.)

2) We have tickets to the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy for tonight's 19:00 showing. That means it'll be 23:00 or later when we get out to drive home. It is expected to be really cold by then, with the wind chill (guessing) around zero F. It's at a theatre a bit farther away from us than usual, but we can take the highway almost all the way to and from, as the roadworks guys will have it well salted.  The other two segments are tomorrow at noon and Sunday at noon.  We'll definitely get to tomorrow's, but Sunday's Return of the King is a toss up right now.  That massive storm is due in and we're to get anywhere from seven to fourteen inches of snow Sunday to Monday. [EDIT: That's been updated to 18+ inches and possibly higher.]  It's just a matter of when it starts snowing.  If it's not due to start snowing until after about 14:00 we'll still go, as the theatre for these two is not very far from us at all and is on a main road - as long as it's snow and not ice that's falling, it's fine if it gets a two-hour start on us. If it's due to start snowing before noon, well, we've seen the movie many times before. There's just something really nice about seeing epics like this on a REALLY big screen with a really good Dolby sound system. And popcorn. And just to get out of the house. [Cabin Fever.]

3) The seed catalogs are rolling in now in the post - I've gotten three this week. It's kind of perverse, given what I see when looking out the window, but they are fun to look through. So many varieties of carrots! (etc.)  I need to go through my seed bank and see what is out-of-date and check to see if I need to order anything.

4) I had ordered a new GMRS radio that arrived yesterday. I took a chance and got it via Amazon. Big mistake - not as described. Missing a special antenna that was to have been with it, not the wattage as advertised, and with an after-market battery from an unnamed company in China.  Thankfully Amazon return will be easy as the drop-off point is in the Whole Foods store near the movies and I'll pop in with it this evening. Should definitely have bought it from a radio shop, but was swayed by the reviews. Live And Learn. (I really should know better by now.)

5) It being almost income tax time, yesterday I hauled out my bin of papers to make sure I had all the 1099s, etc., I'd need. From that I got sucked into organizing my files - the prior filing system having been to throw everything into the big plastic bin and snap the lid on.  I made some progress, but have a ton left to do. I can't quite decide which of them I should shred - surely there'd be no need to have a credit card bill from 2021 any longer?  But having dealt with "proof of continued residence" while in Scotland, I am keeping a subset of everything that goes back as far as I have the paper for. Ya never know, we might need them for a foreign visa someday. There's plenty of others left for the shredder. I'd probably better order in some manila filing folders.

Percolator coffee is much better than pour-over. We had some beans sent in from Hawaii for the holidays and are enjoying a nice, steaming mug of coffee every morning after breakfast. We have enough to last until it thaws outside, too.  ;D

Well, this is fun. (?)  It's been snowing like mad since before dawn, but it's that light fluffy kind so we're in minimal danger of power lines going down unless some idiot drives their car into one. It's actually quite pretty out. It appears to be just under two feet deep so far, and they say it's going to go all night and well into tomorrow.

Yesterday morning as we were getting ready to go off to the second of the LOTR trilogy the theatre emailed that they were adding a special showing of the Return of the King (the third movie) to start an hour after the second one ended, in the same auditorium, and would honor our Sunday tickets if we preferred to watch it yesterday, rather than chancing going out into what has turned into a major storm today.  We took them up on the offer, so we had pretty much 9 straight hours at the movies yesterday. (Only a half-dozen other people accepted the offer, oddly. So we had a lot of room in a theatre with a spectacularly good sound system. Just perfect for this set of movies.)  It's been quite some time since I remained that mentally and emotionally focused on something for that long without a break, and I was just exhausted when we got home last night. But, as my daughter says, I really needed to see the Black Tower explode and crumble.

But driving home in the dark in 6F weather, against a headwind, with the tire low-pressure lights on all the way home kind of pegged my energy meter. (Have to nick to the car repair place to have them put a few extra pounds of pressure into them for the cold weather still to come, once it warms up enough to do so safely.)  Came home to see on the news the latest happenings in Minneapolis, and was so upset I couldn't get to sleep until just before sun-up.  Have had a nap today and it's not enough, so tomorrow will probably be a snow day for me. I need to get caught up on my binge-watching of "The Magnificent Century" series and sleep a lot more. Seeya on the flip side.

Oh, speaking of snow, there's talk in the science circles that a sudden stratospheric warming event may be brewing in the next few days. It's what brought the Beast from the East.  You might want to keep an eye out for info on that.

1) It stopped snowing. We got maybe two feet of it. It is now blindingly bright out there. The plows have done a decent job clearing the roads, but it's dangerous to be outside. The pile of snow on the verges of the road are over six feet tall in places. They brought in a front-end-loader and a truck to take a lot of it away from by our block yesterday.
2) The wind chill is -26F this afternoon, so we're not going out even though the sun is shining. Snow is blowing sideways off nearby roofs.
3) It's time to start planning the garden layout and what seeds to purchase. The catalogs are arriving several times a week now.
4) Left-over Mongolian Beef from our local Chinese restaurant goes well mixed in with soba noodles. We ate the last Tunnocks Tea Cake with tea yesterday. I'll need to bake something to have with this afternoon's tea.
5) I have gotten addicted to a Turkish telenovella "The Magnificent Century" and have spent a lot of time drinking tea and binge-watching it. Even having to use subtitles, it's a good way to spend my weather-incarceration.

Durhamlad, good luck on the medical procedure!
