Another thing to watch is that in some towns and villages you can find the same name used twice (or even more) with a different suffix.  For example, in a small town near to me there is both a Moor Road and a Moor Lane, several hundred yards apart.

I lived in Tennessee for a while and there were so many streets with "Jackson" that they had to change some of the street names. "Jackson Dr., Jackson St., Jackson Ln..." My street became "Jackson Hills Dr."  Strangely my address changed three times while living there but we didn't move!! First the street name, then the zip code, and I think the area code was change while we lived there too...

First let me apologize for the hijack!!

I live in Worcester. Are you from MA?

Yes I'm originally from New Bedford.

I'm not originally from Rhode Island, but I went to university there and stayed on in Providence until I moved here in 2003.
I have LOADS of family all over RI.  Last time I was home we went to the Providence Place Mall.  LOVE that place!!  I was living in SC before I moved here so I never really got a chance to go before my move!!

This reminds me: Anyone ever gotten lost in downtown Atlanta? It seems like every other street was a Peachtree something. It took me and my best friend a looonngg time to find the highway again. (even with maps and mapquest directions)

I noticed that when I was in Atlanta too!    Peachtree Street, Peachtree Plaza, not to mention all the businesses named Peachtree something or other.

That's because every other street IS Peachtree something.  ;)  We're very fond of our peach trees back home in the Peach State.  ;D

I used to live in Marion! Nobody who doesn't live in that area has ever heard of it before, so I always say I lived at "The Cape."  ;) (hijack over sorry!)

Yep, I just say I live either south of Boston or near the cape.  Usually if people have heard of New Bedford it's something bad!!   :P

That made it so confusing!! I thought we were never going to make it  out of downtown ATL. (it was at 3am)  [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

I remember Memphis being the same way...everytime we turned around there was the same  street name. I dont remember what it was now...maybe Poplar?

In New Jersey I lived on either Lake Shore Drive or Lakeshore Drive depending on which road sign you believed.  In Pennsylvania I lived off of Parkersville or Parkerville Road, again depending on which one you believe.

I agree about the street signs, though I depend totally upon a GPS which tells me what road I'm on and the direction in which I'm going.  I don't know how people find their way around without one.

I'm dying for a GPS. I travel alot, and it would make my life easier. Until then, I just use a map.

Satellite navigation systems are fantastic technology, but they do have limitations.  When you get out onto rural backroads they'll often send you roundabout ways which no local would take to get from A to B, especially on shorter journeys.

I once tried a unit to do a local run which through the backroads I can normally do in about 10 minutes.  The SatNav tried to send me on a convoluted route which zig-zagged back and forth and came to almost 20 miles!

To add to the confusion: Road names change from block to block! (Back in the UK here.)

Driving with my wife to a christening in the NorthWest, above Manchester...  My directions said to turn left on High Steet.  And no street signs to be found anywhere.

We came to a large intersection with a stop light, so I figured it MIGHT be High Street, I turned left and asked my wife, "would you spot a street sign so we can be sure we're on the High Street?"

After a few seconds she confirmed, "Yes this is the High Street".  I didn't see any signs and said, "How do you know?"

And she said, "Because the house numbers are getting higher"

  ::)

Now she's been here for a long time, like naturalized long time, and she has a BA degree too.  So I can't imagine what it's like for tourists and new arrivals...

I think it was a state wide thing to deal with population growth. All of east Tennessee went from being 423 to the Knoxville area being 865 and surrounding area is now 423. Middle Tennessee went from everyone being 615 to Nashville area being 615 and the area around Nashville-mostly west-is now 931.

I lived in the Nashville area at the time of the switch, and my grandparents lived in Knoxville.

Ah O.K.  :)     I read your previous post as though you couldn't remember the codes and were trying to recall what they were.   I was just going to look up what the change would have been to refresh your memory.  Sorry, my misinterpretation.

The multitude of new area codes in the 1990s was actually a nationwide thing, although some states to this day still have only one area code.

Historically, from 1954 right through until 1995 Tennessee had just two area codes, 901 and 615.    Prior to 1954, there was just 901 covering the entire state.   But that's probably more telephone geekery than you ever wanted to know!
