Who do you trust when loved ones ship things over to UK?
« on: January 30, 2007, 10:44:35 PM »
My mom wants to know how to ship gifts to us now. I know DHL is good but how are UPS and American Express?

Thanks
Kath

I've actually had better luck with the good old USPS and Royal Mail than with DHL.

My Family & Friends always use USPS to send us our care packages. when we send things back home we use Royal mail as well.

USPS.

For further details, I recommend searching for previous threads, as this has no doubt been answered many times before :)

I've always shipped internationally with the USPS to the UK and further.  After that I would probably recommend UPS.  DHL are decent if you're doing it local, but even then they're less than great.  Depending on the weight of the items being sent depends on the cost of shipping, but generally USPS are cheaper than anyone else (even for domestic), plus they're a lot more reliable.  Just remind your Mom to mark gift on the customs labels (even if the things being sent are your own) so you don't have to pay customs & tax on the things being sent over.   ;D

And you've got to accept that at some point, something will go missing and never turn up. So if she's sending something REALLY valuable try to go with FedEx or something that you can track things with on both sides. You can only track USPS to the point it leaves the USA. Same with Royal Mail. Or at least that's how it was last time I tried to do it.

I've been here almost 7 years and have had one parcel turn up really really late and 2 go missing completely.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
