I usually just wear trainers (sneakers) in rainy weather (actually, pretty much in most weather). Even though they're not exactly waterproof, they're comfortable!

Not many people (apart from kids who like to splash) wear wellies in towns and cities - most of the people that I've seen in wellies recently have been walking their dogs through muddy fields, or live in the countryside - I don't think I've worn any wellies since I was a child.

Despite the current fashion of wearing heels on pretty much any occasion, I don't often wear them unless I'm going out in the evening - mostly because they can be very uncomfortable when I walk 2 miles every day and also because I can't drive in heels!

I'd recommend some nice shoes that are comfortable to walk in for long periods of time.

I would agree with the bring some of what you like and then you can supplement from here camp.  I brought shoes, but I also had a car before and I find that my favorite shoes are good for a night out here and there, but I don't like walking in the city with them.  I find the sidewalks where I live are not as level as I'm used to, and my former narrow heels leave me having to watch every step I take.  I hadn't prepared for that, but came to realize what works well once I got here.  I now have a pair of leather boots I love that I wear a lot.

My only main advice is that I wish I had brought some more long-sleeved things for lounging around the house in.  I find that a lot of the Brits I hang out with aren't as heat system dependent as I was in the states.  We stay warm, but we tend to only use the radiator during certain times of day if it isn't too freezing outside.  I do fine in my house overall, but I find that I'm wearing a cardigan a lot to just keep some of the cooler air off my arms.  I wish I had brought a few more long-sleeved t-shirts and such for the winter.  It could be worse.  My BIL opens the window in his house to keep fresh air going--I freeze there if I don't come prepared with long sleeves.
