Hiya,

Do I have to give notice where I live, or can I give notice where we get married? Im asking because Ive been told the registrar where I am is being difficult even though its obvious I am here as a fiancee to get married, and refuses to let us register, so I have been told to go to a different registrar, as it is we were giving notice in a different town to where we live anyway since we were told being an american I couldnt give notice in my local registrars office.

This is becoming increasingly more difficult and I am getting extremely frustrated.

The registrar probably isn't just being difficult.  S/he just isn't allowed to have individuals with visas give notice there, most likely.

You have to go to one of the "designated" register offices since you're subject to immigration control.  You can find a list of them here:  Clicky

You just have to give them proof that you've been living at your current address for the required period of time, and of course take your passport with your visa.  For instance, we went to Nottingham to register (we live in Derby, but Derby's register office isnt a designated one).  We just phoned them up, made an appointment, and then took in our electric bill and council tax statement (I wasn't sure if we'd need separate proof of address, so we just took both).  The lady there interviewed us separately, then we paid our £60 and she mailed off something to Pershore (which is where we're getting married).  About two weeks later I went back to Nottingham to collect our authorities, and then I sent them off to Pershore.  It's easy, I promise.

Thank you Zeusy :) Good to be back, its nice to have others who know what its like living in a different country. And I may be a bit biased but thank you, Emma is perfect :) hehe

Candice- I went to a designated register office, but thankfully I got it all sorted, that particular registrar didnt know what she was doing as was confirmed by another registrar in the same office, as well as the superintendent registrar. We get to give notice on the 12th, and booked our wedding for March 10th...one month! Ive already gotten into planning mode as I feel like time is flying by very quickly! I didnt allow myself to make any solid plans until we knew we'd get to get married, so now that we have a date I feel like there's a million things to get done, and my fiance is cool as a cucumber...must be nice to be the groom ;)

omg it is...its driving my fiance completely mad, poor guy ;) its constantly on my mind now, we're going to be discussing plans with df's parents tomorrow as they have offered to pay for the wedding, so we need to know just what that entails.

Also have to get a guest list, like, now...so I can send out invitations, have to find someone to do my hair/makeup, and find someone to make a cake...I dread the cost of that even though I want something very basic!
