Extreme weight loss...
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:17:10 PM »
I'm not sure what is causing it, but I have lost 40 lbs since I've moved to England. Not that I'm complaining, I needed to lose it. Could the food be that different here?
I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing.

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area!!

I lost 30 lbs after moving here.  I hadn't made any major diet changes but mine was attributed to increase in exercise.  Back home, I drove EVERYWHERE.  My mother lived a little less than a mile away from me and i never walked to her house.  Over here I walk a lot more and think nothing of walking to a destination a mile or two away.  I'm almost afraid to buy a car over here for fear of falling back into old habits lol.  Also, for me anyways, when I was in the US I spent a lot of time on the pc, emailing/chatting to DF.  I would munch junk food all the time while on the pc.  Now that we're together, we get out and do a lot of things so I have a lot less time to mindlessly pig out ;D  Those were my reasons anyways.

I also think it's contributed to the fact that there are less fast food places. I know there are takeaways and such but even at their worst I still think it's healthier than the taco bells, mcdonalds, etc. Also a lot of the food has less preservatives and additives and I feel that contributed to my loss of over 30 pounds too.

Yankee, walking does help here too :P

Thanks girls....
I do walk more but I never thought it would lead to such a loss in only 7 months. It has inspired me to keep going with it. I've started eating better and trying to add a bit of yoga into my life for toning up.
Can anyone tell me how many pounds are in a stone??

When I lived in Ireland, I weighed considerably less.  I walked everywhere, food was fresher and not as processed, and I felt overall, much healthier.  When I moved back to the states, I gained 20 pounds despite being a gym person.  Of course, I kept gaining and that is when I found out I had a thyroid problem (thankfully, I leveled off after about 50 pounds total gained).  Despite that, I think that I was healthier while living in Europe and look forward to coming back.  Good job with the weight loss!  And have fun with the yoga.  I LOVE yoga!
I am the architect of my destiny.

I lost alot of weight when I was there too. I didnt really change my died...I think it was because I walked alot more than I do here (didnt have a car then).

I gained it all back when I came back to the states.  :(

This thread is a bit ironic, because I always feel like I put weight ON when I'm in the UK! :P Probably has something to do with my love of things like curries, mince pies, Cadbury's chocolate, kebabs, etc.  :P ::)

Same for me!  But I think it's also because I walk so much less here.  I came from NYC, so I walked everywhere and it helped keep my weight down.

That said I'm incredibly jealous that you all have lost so much weight. :P

Ditto for me! I walk much more here than I did in the States, but it doesn't seem to work off all the nice things I like to eat!  :P

LOL!  Well 2 stone was what I gained when I got here (I swear it just seeped in when I came through customs) and two more have also stuck around after the wee one.  (Though I did lose half a stone recently) So I'm not thrilled, but I would not trade it for anything.

Losing 40 pounds in 7 months is certainly possible by increasing exercise and changing diet, but a word of caution - if it continues to the point where you wonder whether or not it's normal then please do consult a doctor. Extreme weight loss can be a sign of an underlying illness.

it's portion size i think. brits are totally unhealthy but fewer obese people saved only by their smaller portions.

my two cents!

congrats on the weight loss!
