A Hello and that stuff
« on: February 17, 2004, 03:13:28 PM »
Well I have lurked through youar board for a couple of weeks after my significant american other sent me the site.  So what to say I am English born and bred in Cheshire and my name is Stuart.  My American lady friend (who is a lot older than I well over a year) lives at the moment in Pa (but you can read her own hello under the pen name of HG) and we are hopefully in the process of sorting out a move for her and her daughter.  I really can't think of anything else to say right now maybe I will do better replying to replies :).

Hey Zap,, welcome to UKY!  You will find that most of us have been there, done that,, own the t-shirt :)  In other words,, we can help with most questions you and your beloved may have. It's good to know what others expirenced when you are going thru the process. I didn't have that luxury when my husband and I went thru it,, and I remember how stressed the smallest thing would be. It's all good when it's done tho, and the British are very aware that it's hard for people to be apart, and try to make the process as painless as they can. :)

Hi there Stuart and welcome to UKY.  It's always nice to have the other halves join us!  Thanks for stopping by to say hello as well.  About all I know about Cheshire is that there isa cheese by that name and the infamous Cheshire Cat.

The whole process of going through immirgation is challenging and a bit of a pain, but I wish you all the best of luck!

Ok feel the needs to again say thankyou for all the nice replies because there have been more of them.  Actually the real reason is I am trying to beat HG 16 replies as if in some strange British way that proves I am the nicer person  ;D so please say hi again.  Oh or maybe people have any electrical questions they may want answering (fully qualified electrician here able to help out with queries  ;D

ROFL!  Let me add to your replies!

Um um um trying to think of a question.....

oh I got one.  Are there really two voltages in the UK one for the washer and one for the rest of the house?

zap, we seem to actually have found a good electrician in our frantic search. Would you perhaps be able to field plumbing questions?

I can field plumbing questions but only with the answer "ask a plumber" but I am not sure that helps.  And not exactly vnicepeeps you can buy 415volt washers but they are really for hotels care homes that kind of thing but rarely if ever in a normal home.  In America though I thought that was the case 110v for most of your appliances and 220/240v for washer cooker.  But maybe I was told wrong :)

Hi Zap,

Welcome to the site, :)

Just a quick question, and not an electrical one.

My husband and I are moving back to England in a couple of weeks. We are open to relocation due to availability of my husband's profession. We last lived in a very expensive area of England (Berkshire), and have been researching other, less expensive areas.

I noticed that you live in Cheshire. Staffordshire, which is next to you, seems to have some inexpensive housing--i.e. 170,000 GBP for a 4 bed detached. We have looked at house prices in most of the areas, Derby, Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Crewe. My question is this--why are the houses so much cheaper in that area? Is it gross, dirty, or very industrialised? Nuclear power plants? Just wondering as it looks like it could be a nice place to live with its close proximity to Wales and beautiful countryside.

I would appreciate it if you would kindly give your opinion on this, :)

Again, welcome to the site.

Jenny
