One-way travel...
« on: February 06, 2007, 10:38:56 PM »
I've just been doing a bit of research on one way flights from the US to the UK and the question I keep asking myself, why are they so gosh-darn expensive?!  I'm looking in August - which, yes, I know is very expensive - but isn't a little ridiculous that a one-way flight to LHR from Detroit is 900, and a round trip is 1000?

How many stops are you willing to make?  I ask because I just now discovered what I think might be my new favourite airfare site.  (Sorry sidestep.com....you're in second place now.)  It's www.bt-store.com, and I just found three one-way tickets from Las Vegas to Edinburgh for a grand total of....drum roll please....$763.  Granted that's next week.  But I plugged in Detroit to LHR for the 8th of August and it came up w/a fare for $469 (or something really close to that).  But it involved two stops, one at Chicago and the other at Manchester...

That's really good price crabbit found!

Is there any reason why you couldn't just book a return and not use the second part of it?  I know I have done that in the past.   I gave up with one ways as they were so expensive.

I really wish someone would come up with a search engine that allowed you to search just based on destination. Like Heathrow to LAX on any date between March and May. That way if you didn't have a specific date in mind, you could just see what was available.

I just book roundtrip. Even if my return ticket to the US has to be changed for some reason, it's cheaper than booking a one way ticket. When I flew back to the UK in January, I was looking into one way. It was $700 for a one way ticket. Okay, since I have a wedding in the US in July, I decided to book a roundtrip ticket and have that flight as my return trip. So, I found a roundtrip flight for $500. Okay, what if I switch the dates around a bit? By flying back 2 days earlier I got my flight for $300 (not including fees and such)! This also means I'll now be home for the 4th of July!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I know thats what I did as well, booked a roundtrip ticket when I came moved over to the UK. I just didnt use my return ticket, it was almost $300 dollars cheaper to do it that way. I came over in July 04 so ticket prices were more expensive than the Fall prices.

It's not always cheaper to book round trip.  The one-way fares I'm finding for my next trip are much cheaper than the round-trip fares.  However, you can book a round trip fare as long as it's the FIRST leg of the ticket that you're planning on using.

That would be cool.  I seem to remember that yahoo travel has a 'flexible dates search', but I think it was only for round trip fares, not one-way...

Most of the time I've found that those flexible date searches only allow a period of one or two weeks.  I wish I could see every date in a month!  Other than cetain holidays I'll want to go home for, I'm pretty flexible.

So it doesn't matter when you come back, as long as you do?  So if I book a round trip ticket in the fall, I can just use the return at any time?  Are there any restrictions?  Do you sites like priceline and hotwire allow you to do that or is it the airline?

I haven't used yahoo travel for yonks, because I've found other sites that in my opinion find me a better fare.  But as I recall, you put in the date range you're looking for (say Jan-May), it lists available fares, you click the fare you want, then it brings up a calendar of what dates that particular fare is available.  In my experience, though, even though yahoo says the fare is available on such and such a date, it may not actually be available.  So if you select that date, you get a message saying that there are no seats available at that fare and you need to select either a different date or a different fare.  (The is the US yahoo travel site...the UK site works a bit differently.)

It depends on the kind of ticket you buy.  Full-fare tickets are unrestricted, meaning you can change travel dates with no penalty, but they are also very expensive.  I usually end up with 'restricted' tickets, sometimes meaning that they cannot be changed, but usually meaning there's a hefty penalty for change.  If you're sure that you can travel on the dates you've chosen, a restricted ticket is going to be MUCH less expensive.

that made me laugh!   :D  Of course you are completely correct!  I was just picturing someone not turning up for the first leg.... you gotta eventually get somewhere, don't ya!  So they are trying to return from somewhere they never initially ended up?  lol  or  how are they going to get someplace they dont' want to return from if they don't go the first leg? :)

I have booked a return and just not used the second ticket as well.

I suppose the reason the one way tickets are so expensive is to discourage people from purchasing one leg of the flight with them, and then returning with another carrier, so they don't risk having an unsold seat on the return flight.

People have tried it....for instance, you're trying to get from London to NYC.  You discover that an NYC to London round-trip is way cheaper than London to NYC round trip or London to NYC one-way.  So they book the round-trip, try to hop on in London for their flight to NYC only to find that it's been cancelled because they were a 'no show' on the first leg!  ::)

(I've been searching for the cheapest ways from point A to point B for YEARS...it's amazing what people will do!)

Try Yahoo FareChase... it's a little tab at the top... I agree, the regular Yahoo travel search is not very good. I have always had good luck with the FareChase and it links you directly to the airline's site so I think it is searching websites instead of consolidated stock which has a greater potential to be sold out.

ahhh... my fare just went down $20... excellent! I am still holding out!!

I have been told by travel agents that new fares get published on Wednesdays, if that helps anyone!
