Re-entering the UK with less than 6 months left on US passport
« on: February 12, 2007, 10:17:15 PM »
Hi,
My wife and I are travelling to the US in April to see her relatives. Her passport expires in May, but she has an ILR stamp in her passport. I was just wondering if this will be OK for her both to get into the US and back into the UK as she only will have a month left on her passport. I don't want to apply yet for a new US passport for her as we would have to pay more money to transfer the ILR over and her British citizenship has been applied for and should be through shortly so we shouldn't need ILR for much longer.

Any advice/experiences much appreciated

Robin

Won't be a problem getting her back in the UK.  Not sure about the US, but I should think so.

I thought you could travel on a new passport and keep your ILR stamp/sticker in the old passport as long as you carried both with you through immigration.  Does anyone know if that is true?

You do know that she'll still need an American passport for flying into the USA, no matter what other passport she has.

Yep Yael,
Exactly what i was going to say. She'll still need a new US passport in any case. I had to renew my US one while i was still on ILR and just carried the expired one and valid one so if they wanted to see the ILR stamp they could.
Once i got my British passport I now just carry both the newer US passport and my UK passport.
