What form do you use to file US taxes while working in the UK?

We are so confused. My husband and I moved to the UK in February '05 so this is the first year we have to deal with this. We both have jobs here.

What do we use to file US taxes? I know we won't owe anything, but we still need something to prove that, right? I just called the Revenue office, they said they send something out automatically on April 5th, which won't help us file taxes in the states unless we file for an extension.

We asked at our jobs, his job just gave him a letter from the HR department showing what we paid, but I don't think it's official enough to satisfy the IRS.

So what is it that I'm asking for? We seem to be going in circles and I can't figure out the next step.

How come you didn't file taxes for the year 2005 in the US?  You should have done, I would think.

You should also file for an extension now for to allow you more time to get things figured out.

There are a lot of things that you'll need to do your taxes - is using an accountant an option for you?  Take a look at the posts in this forum to get more information about filing - it's not as simple as just which form to use, unfortunately.   :-\\\

I think you mean you moved here February 2006 (not 2005).
