Morgana: best of luck finishing you MPhil---best of luck especially with your "viva" (defence) which I assume must be coming up soon. By the way, after my MA I am considering going on to Study law in the UK (immigration/Ayslum/international law) does St. Andrews have a law school/programme? I have heard good things about the poli sci dept... .
cheers everyone,
Samantha***
AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Samantha, if you value your sanity, don't go to St Andrews!!!
There isn't a law program there, to the best of my knowledge, although the university is internationally recognized for its Terrorism research department. As for poli sci there, not sure about that either. But I will caution you greatly about going there.
It is a very small town, based on golf and the university. Hence, rent is verrrry expensive, and there is a lot of resentment towards the students. Not a pleasant place to live. Unless you enjoy 24-hour drinking and nightly dinner parties thrown by twenty-somethings pretending to be adults, all the while using Daddy's credit card.
It is an hour away from Edinburgh by train, and has very few modern conveniences. There is one cinema, about forty pubs, no laser tag, no bowling alley (unless you count lawn bowling) and no fast food of any sort, except crap pizza. The only sport in town is baiting RAF guys (who are idiots, are generally none of them are actual pilots. I got hit on by a guy who PAINTS the planes!!!)
I'll tell you about my department in private - just send me message if you're interested.
In general, I'd say pick a few universities in the UK, and make plans to go visit them, check out the area and the people in the department, before you decide. St Andrews is lovely... in the day time... I might be able to hook you up with a decent place to live, if you're still interested. (It was the flat I had there, and it was lovely! Cheap and all to myself!)
Keep your options open, and be honest about your own personality. I thought I could live in a tiny town without owning a car, and still maintain my sanity. I was wrong.
As for the MPhil - thankfully, the examiners have decided that a viva is unnecessary, so I don't have to suffer that ignominy either. *whew*
Hope all is well with your studies! Sorry it took so long for me to reply! If you have any other questions, just let me know!
