but what's throwing me off is that there are TWO different things on the UL label, the amps the machine takes, and the volts that the light needs. Do I figure these together?
No, the figures for the lamp are just so that you know what type of bulb it takes. The voltage and current ratings on the left of the label are the ones you need to use:
1.0 amp x 120 volts = 120 VA.
You should always make an allowance for a motor because it has a slight surge at switch-on, although the small type used on a sewing machine in conjunction with the fact that you have the foot pedal speed control will minimize that in this application.
If you are looking at the transformers on the Newmarket site, any of the 300VA range would be fine.
they are heavy, good quality transformers.
At risk of boring everyone by repeating this again, I'll endorse that. You want a good transformer. Avoid the really cheap transformerless converters at all costs. They will give you nothing but trouble, especially on an appliance with a motor, and you'll end up wishing you'd spent a little more for a good transformer in the first place.
