which transformer for sewing machine?
« on: March 07, 2007, 01:09:49 PM »
Hoiyer there everyone,

I've done my best to try and figure out which converter I need for my sewing machine, but what's throwing me off is that there are TWO different things on the UL label, the amps the machine takes, and the volts that the light needs. Do I figure these together? Can someone help me figure out which converter to get, so that I can use this in the UK? Thanks!

Visit these guys:

http://www.newmarket-transformers.co.uk/

I got my KitchenAid transformer from them and it is awesome. Good price, too. I phoned them to confirm what I needed and just ended up ordering on the phone rather than thru the web page.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The Newmarket people encourage you to contact them so that they can recommend the proper transformer for your application.  I bought one for my KitchenAid and Cuisinart - they are heavy, good quality transformers.  Definitely was worth the money when I compare the cost with buying brand new small appliances.

No, the figures for the lamp are just so that you know what type of bulb it takes.   The voltage and current ratings on the left of the label are the ones you need to use:

1.0 amp x 120 volts = 120 VA.

You should always make an allowance for a motor because it has a slight surge at switch-on, although the small type used on a sewing machine in conjunction with the fact that you have the foot pedal speed control will minimize that in this application.

If you are looking at the transformers on the Newmarket site, any of the 300VA range would be fine.

they are heavy, good quality transformers.

At risk of boring everyone by repeating this again, I'll endorse that.  You want a good transformer.  Avoid the really cheap transformerless converters at all costs.  They will give you nothing but trouble, especially on an appliance with a motor, and you'll end up wishing you'd spent a little more for a good transformer in the first place.   :)
