You can probably download a picture and the truck's specs for the insurance company. They might be able to work up a quote for you.

Hi LouiseHoward,

I have an 03 F150 Harley Davidson and have it insured through these guys

http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/

They're Excellent! my renewal about 4 months ago was around £950ish for the year.

I'd used them previously before I had a USA car and since I can only say I've been impressed with their quotes/policies and ability to insure specialist cars/drivers

Have you got all your SVA testing and modifications needed to make your car UK road legal sorted out?

also, would you mind if I asked you how old the car is and if you have had to pay VAT & Import tax etc? I just want to get a first hand experience from someone who's done this rather than what I've read on sites etc.

Hope the link will help - im pretty sure it will

Cheers! DtM West London & Slough UK!

Q-G!

At the time we were looking at 'what exactly' to bring over, the F150 Harley was our no.1 choice, here are the others

1. The F350 Dually Diesel thing
2. We found a mildly Stretched Escalade
3. a Dodge (forgot model) dually thingy

Really wanted the F350 Harley dually thingy, checked the dimensions and thought "the flippin F150 which is the baby of the range will hardly fit into the driveway, the dam F350 will stick out halfway into the street!"

We wisely got the F150! - the day it got delivered, me mum came back from work and said 'my house is hidden behind that lorry thingy' ! didn't want to tell her we were about the get the 'BIG' truck !

I'll endorse Adrian Flux as well.  I have my insurance (underwritten by Equity Redstar) with them at the moment on my little '87 Bronco II.    Last renewal in July was £166 for the year, TPF&T.

As soon as you mention an American vehicle, many insurers either can't hang up quick enough or they'll try to quote insanely high premiums based on ridiculous suppositions (like the one some years ago who tried to tell me that a Ford LTD station wagon must be a high-performance "sporty" model simply because of its engine size  ::) ).

Dennis,

I'd be interested in hearing first-hand experiences of the SVA test as well, as I've heard all sorts of stories which sometimes seem contradictory.   It's only applicable to imported vehicles less than 10 years old, by the way.

When it comes to the regular MoT inspection, I'd say shop around carefully for a good inspector.

Some of them can be real sticklers for the "My book says you must have" line, while others take a far more practical approach to "unusual" cars and realize that there are certain gray areas with private imports.

For example, I use an MoT station a few miles away that I found shortly after moving here and have stuck with.  He charges the full fee, but he's the sort of guy who's quite happy for you to climb down into the pit yourself to have a look around and discuss things during the inspection, and -- for those of us in the area with American vehicles -- he won't fail U.S.-built cars for having amber parking lights, red rear turn signals, no rear fog light, etc.

Im a pretty confident driver, and my first car in the UK was  Nissan Patrol, which is a reasonably big SUV.  I got myself into a few sticky situations with the size of that car, and of course the Suburban is much bigger!  I lived in London when i had that motor... location can make all the difference.
Hopefully the OP lives out in the country somewhere so wont encounter the same issues with big cars on narrow roads!

I'm really curious, but why do people need SUVs in England? I've only seen flat roads, I didn't think one needed an offroad vehicle to drive on a flat road. Not having a dig, I'm really curious...

I've been on country roads here in England with only one quite narrow lane with enough room, just, for one small to medium sized car to pass (and certainly not two going oppposite directions!)....such that if you happen to meet face to face with another car, one has to back up to the nearest layby, which could be 1/4 mile or so worth of backing up!  Surely a monstrously enormous Suburban would likely get all scratched up going down one of those between trees & hedges. :)

My Forester is all scratched up for exactly the same reasons.

Yup, I know many roads that you can't get a large car down without risking your paint job! And I've lived in many counties here in the UK and driven both country and city roads.

All I can say to the OP is good luck!! :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I drive a Golf and I've almost gone gray w/ the stress of trying to squeeze past cars here in south Manchester.  The roads around here are littered w/ wonky droopy wing mirrors that have been clipped my passing cars.  I'd go grey and lose my hair if I tried driving anything larger.  Not to mention go broke trying to gas that sucker up.  I shudder just thinking about it.  I do wish the OP luck though.  Once you drive a big car it's hard to go back to something smaller.
