I'll endorse Adrian Flux as well. I have my insurance (underwritten by Equity Redstar) with them at the moment on my little '87 Bronco II. Last renewal in July was £166 for the year, TPF&T.
As soon as you mention an American vehicle, many insurers either can't hang up quick enough or they'll try to quote insanely high premiums based on ridiculous suppositions (like the one some years ago who tried to tell me that a Ford LTD station wagon must be a high-performance "sporty" model simply because of its engine size
).
Have you got all your SVA testing and modifications needed to make your car UK road legal sorted out?
Dennis,
I'd be interested in hearing first-hand experiences of the SVA test as well, as I've heard all sorts of stories which sometimes seem contradictory. It's only applicable to imported vehicles less than 10 years old, by the way.
When it comes to the regular MoT inspection, I'd say shop around carefully for a good inspector.
Some of them can be real sticklers for the "My book says you must have" line, while others take a far more practical approach to "unusual" cars and realize that there are certain gray areas with private imports.
For example, I use an MoT station a few miles away that I found shortly after moving here and have stuck with. He charges the full fee, but he's the sort of guy who's quite happy for you to climb down into the pit yourself to have a look around and discuss things during the inspection, and -- for those of us in the area with American vehicles -- he won't fail U.S.-built cars for having amber parking lights, red rear turn signals, no rear fog light, etc.
