Hazard Perception Test
« on: March 11, 2007, 06:31:10 AM »
I have my theory test scheduled for the 22nd of this month so I've been studying again.  I have managed to (mostly) consistently pass the theory test but the hazard perception part is just kicking my butt!  I haven't passed it a single time, not one!  I'm freaking out a bit about this because it just seems so dumb.  I am a procrastinator so I have left this for the last minute, I have to have a full license by April 28th or I'll have to put L plates on the car and won't be able to drive on my own.  Anyone care to share some tips, etc about the hazard perception part?  TIA!

Do you mean that you're having trouble passing the mock hazard tests on the DVD? If so, the actual test is quite a bit easier (clearer) if that makes you feel any better. I was passing my mock tests at home about 30% of the time, but aced the actual test. Keep plugging away; you can do it. Are you over-clicking? Or missing things completely? Or not being quick enough to click? Perhaps if you can pinpoint where you're going wrong, you can focus on that.

DVD... CD-ROM ... that's what I meant. I'm not so good with the technical stuff.  ;)

I'd say to keep practicing.

My software allowed me to click a LOT more than the test at the center. It was the part of the test I was worried about since I didn't feel like I had a good handle on what they were looking for. I scored a big fat zero on my first clip because I overclicked. :(

At the actual test center, they seem to be looking for you to spot and click on the really big, obvious ones. The lorry backing into your path rather than every pedestrian. They are only looking for 1-2 hazards per clip even if you, as an experienced driver, *see* many more.

Try not to worry. The majority of people do just fine and I am sure you will as well.

I do know how you feel though, as I put all of this off until the last minute as well, and am very glad to be done with it. Now to get through the first 2 years w/o getting 6 points.  ;D

I'd have to say overclicking was my issue as well. I tried to mainly keep an eye out for the big stuff on the actual test, rather than every little thing. I think it's just because we're paranoid that we'll miss something, so we tend to click on practically EVERYTHING. I did horribly every time I did the practice one, but when I did the actual test, I did fine. Now I just have to get past my practical this week and life is good. Best of luck to you!

I hated the hazzard perception part of the test. I just barely passed that section.  I was given a zero for over clicking during one of the sequences!!  I seriously thought I was seeing hazzards so that completely freaked me out.  I'd say it was the hardest part of the sit down theory test.   I bought a cheap cd-rom from pcworld and it really helped!!  I just crammed the night before the test and I passed it on my first try.  Like I said the hazzard part was stressful but still passable.

To be totally honest June I drove illegally for about 8 months.  I drove for a year and then just never got around to taking lessons.  Finally around November, 5 months after my year was up, I took some lessons and I passed my driving test in January.  I KNOW it's a bad thing to do but I would only drive like a couple of times a month.  We just got so used to me taking the car occasionally to pop down to the store.  Oh well, I have my license now so I'm OK.

Yes, it is the mock test I keep failing.  Now I have a better idea of what it is they are actually looking for and I am doing better but still haven't passed one.  How many times are you allowed to click in the real test? Ballpark.  I suppose the CD-ROM is pretty forgiving.  My problem is that sometimes I miss the hazard altogether and others I don't click soon enough.  I'll keep hacking at it!

Remember that the Hazard Perception test was designed for learner drivers. You need to take the test thinking like a new driver. Experienced drivers seem to have a hard time with this part of the test because of the experience we have in driving. One thing that helped me was to look for hazards on the left hand side of the car and in front of the car. The only time I clicked for something that was on my right hand side of the car was for headlights coming towards me, cars turning in front of me or people on the crosswalk. This helped me out and I was able to pass my test first time. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

There are only 1 or 2 hazards per clip and they're REALLY obvious, if the practice clips are anything to go by.  If I were to click on what I considered to be hazards, I'd come up with about 10 per clip (pedestrians, intersections, parked cars, etc.), but the CD-ROM only considered one thing to be a hazard (someone crossing the street slowly, for example).

Keep in mind that a hazard is anything that would cause you to slow down, stop, or change direction.  If you keep that in mind, you won't overclick.

I didn't prepare at all for the hazard perception part other than watch the free CD they give you. It would have been nice to know what to click at but like others have said the big hazards are rather obvious and throw in a few more clicks for good measure.

I lost points for one clip and it frazzled me but i just decided to go slower and consider what is REALLY a hazard not just every pedestrian on the sidewalk. The obvious ones to look out for are horses or sheep on the road or a ball and kid or truck pulling out.

Deep breaths and you will be fine.

Now the 6 points in 2 years well that one won't be fun!
