Corned Beef?
« on: March 12, 2007, 05:10:11 PM »
Any chance of me finding a nice cured corned beef brisket over here?  The kind you'd buy in a vacuum pack in the US around St. Patrick's Day?  I only ever eat it once a year, but I'm craving corned beef, overcooked cabbage and potatoes.

I've never seen it! You can get a regular rolled brisket but that's all I've seen. I usually make ham and cabbage.

I don't know if you can get it in slabs, but you can most definitely find great corned beef in restaurants in the London area, I just had a sandwich on Saturday at Borough Market.  Only it's called salt beef here.  Check with Jewish restaurants, like Blooms, if they're still in business in the Whitechapel area.

oooh...anywhere in the WMids that may carry it?? I missssss corned beef! Used to eat it loads...mom had a small cafe and there was a Jewish guy from NYC who came in and said it was the best corned beef he'd ever had and the best put together reuben he'd ever seen! (that was my handywork there! lol nothing ever fell off like it does at most places apparently)

Oooh, I haven't had a reuben since I was at my sister's house over the summer and I made her get the stuff to make them...mmmmm

must look for salt beef.... ;D

Where might I find salt beef?  Butcher?  Supermarket?  Speciality deli?  Does it come raw and cured and I boil it myself, or is it generally sold as cooked meat (lunch meat style)?

I found my salt beef!   ;D  It's simmering as I type.  I found it at Sainsbury's - it's a joint, not a brisket - so I'll just have to wait and see how it tastes.  I bet it's good though.  And even if it is only ok I'll still get boiled cabbage and the sandwiches should be decent.

I just had a sandwich on Saturday at Borough Market.  Only it's called salt beef here.

Was it from Roast?  If so, I shared one of those sandwiches with my brother a few months ago. It was one of the best freakin sandwiches I've ever eaten.  *salivating*

I was actually asking DH about this today, a little late I know, but might have a look out at Sainsburys.  My stepmom used to always make the one in the vacuum pack with all the spices already in it.  It was yummy.

Yes, it was and they do incredible sandwiches.  I love Borough Market anyway, not TOO far away from me by tube.
