will myhubby be eligablefor student loans
« on: March 13, 2007, 08:21:04 AM »
I am asking this info on behalf of my hubby as he is deployed right now,and cant access any info  for himself.

our plan is that once we have the spousal visa, that hubby will work part time and study full time, we have already set the ball rolling with the university he will apply for ( as he will be using his GI Bill to help pay fees, the course has to be approved).

Will HE be eligible to apply for student loans from the US or UK one he is here on a spousal visa.

IF so how do we go about doing this??

It has been 5 years since i finished with education and i know alot has changed since then any info would be appreciated.

loans from the US- yes...but only Stafford loans from the govt or private loans.

loans from the UK- no.  He's not eligible for those until he can pay home fees, which he can get after having 3 years residence in the UK and ILR.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Try this page at IEFC- http://www.iefc.com/us/us_stafford.cfm

They specialise in Stafford and private loans for US citizens studying at overseas schools- I got my private loan through them and they were fantastic.  The page above has links to Stafford loan information for undergraduate and graduate students.

also note that in order to get a Stafford loan from the US government, the university abroad has to have a FAFSA school code (which you can look up on www.fafsa.ed.gov.)  Most unis in the UK have this code already, but there are a few that don't so be sure and check beforehand.
