I think you will find that Whole Foods is a lot like Trader Joes just on a large scale.  I remeber shoping at Whole Foods when it was just a small little store back in the 80s.  I found similar stuff at Trader Joes when I shoped there in the 90s in New Hampshire.

I bet if Whole Foods can make a going concern of it then it will be the market leader for more stores of a similar type.  Fingers crossed.  I am lucky that we have a similar type store to Trader Joes in Canterbury not as good but close.

I always wondered what Trader Joe's was and why it was so great after hearing my sister talk about it. Then I visited her in Portland, Oregon for her law school graduation last year and she took me to Trader Joe's and I understood the allure immediately. Especially for someone who is lactose intolerant, it was nice to find foods that were dairy free, vegetarian, or just healthy in general. If they come to the UK that'd be great. I haven't ventured out much to find healthy food stores in my area yet, but I hope there's some good stuff like Trader Joe's.

True, but Whole Foods doesn't have Two Buck Chuck, which is what I most often found myself buying at Trader Joes  ;D

Though it was drinkable, I used to work for a winery and I have it on good authority that the reason that wine makers can make a wine that cheap is that they pump it up with additives and chemicals and use grapes that otherwise wouldn't make a decent wine. It's cheap and quaffable, but it's horrible for you and if you're sensitive to the chemicals that go into mass produced wines it'll give you a far worse hangover than a higher quality wine.... You're better off watching for a good deal on a higher quality cheap wine like Bonny Doon Big House Red (or White) and stocking up!

Sorry for the brief hijack. I'm psyched about Whole Foods (or Whole Paycheck as we used to call it in SF).  ;)

I used to live in Texas and shopped at Whole Foods all the time.

I've been to the Austin flagship store they are talking about in the article and it is INSANELY massive.  I've never seen anything like it.

I'm just looking forward to some of the 365 products and hopfully bulk bin buying.

I'll be on the megatrain from Salisbury to London sometime in June! :)

In Bristol there is a store called Fresh and Wild that looks like a smaller version of Whole Foods.

I made my first pilgrimage to the Whole Foods shop on Kensington High Street -- the first Whole Foods outside of North America.  The first adjective that comes to mind is: WOW!

Whole Foods is a proper American supermarket. Three stories total. The top floor is a giant food court with restaurants serving great sushi, pizza, crepes, seafood, Middle Eastern and other cuisines. There is even a small pub that serves SIERRA NEVADA BEER....ON TAP!!!  You could come here for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

All the products are billed as organic and natural.  No processed foods here.  The butcher and fishmonger serve the freshest meats I've seen in London. The veg and fruit are all fantastic.  They have quite a few Whole Food brand American foods like peanut butter, cereals, ingredients, pancake mix, syrups, jams and jellies, etc.  The beer aisle stocks Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams (by the case!!), Anchor Steam and a few other American brewery choices.  The extensive wine section has a good selection of California wines.

That said, Whole Foods is expensive. Much moreso than your average Tesco or Sainsburys.  But then, you get what you pay for.
