What should i bring back?
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:36:18 AM »
Realizing that i only have a small amount of space to bring stuff back since i'm leaving for good, i want to see what others would bring.

I'm bringing:
Tea
A BIG jar of green and blacks hot coco (i've seen small in the USA but they are $$!)
A jar or two of tiptree jam

I should bring DH some marmite although he's never eaten it here!!!

I'm sorry to see you going!!  We'll miss you.

I like taking crumpets home.  They don't last as long as some things, but they are hard to find in the states.

Many of the other things I like are more regional to Wales, bara brith, for instance.  Also, I don't know if you've had it, but I've picked up a bit of a habit with lemon curd.  I like taking that for family in the states.  It's like lemon meringue pie on a slice of bread, yum.

Outside of those things, most of my new favorites are things I've learned to cook myself, so I can do them back home too.  Good luck deciding, and best of luck with the move.  I don't envy you the process.  I'm still unpacking here (and I've been here for four months!)

I wouldn't worry, Amy! If you think of things after you've moved, I'm sure some of us can send you care packages!  ;)

Dh wished he would have brought more jaffa cakes :P  He eats these things like crazy!  If there is any certain candy you absolutely love, I'd bring some of that.  Anymore, there are loads of places that sell British foods.  In our area, there are 2 specialty stores and 3 of the regular groceries that carry different things.

Am I right in thinking that you are going back to MA, Aimiloo? Stop & Shop and Shaw's/Star Market have quite good Brit/Irish sections these days and I can get tea, marmite, Jaffa cakes etc all the time.  I also recommend checking the food section at Christmas Tree Shops on a regular basis: it's a bit hit and miss but when they have Brit stuff it's ace and CHEAP. They sell the cheapest Cadbury's Fingers and a couple of weeks ago even had Tiptree jam!!

DH missed chocolate bars (that he never eats when he's here), savoury crisps, biscuits, tea and beans.  Biscuits and tea are the only things he ever eats on a regular basis when he's in the UK, but cravings for the other stuff came with homesickness.  Bring back any food that your husband (or you) crave when you're feeling down.

We were able to find passable rich tea biscuits (different name, sold by Goya), plain digestives, passable tea (Tetley's British Blend), and Heinz beans (Indian grocery store).  We also made friends with our local sausage man and he'd phone us up if he'd made a batch of British-style sausages.

I forgot Branston Pickle, if you like it.  We never found it in the US.

Like a lot of things, I think it depends on where you are in the US. In New England, I don't think Amy will have any trouble finding Branston! As Daisy said, Stop & Shop has a whole section for British food - and that was nearly 5 years ago when I last lived in Rhode Island! But common things like Branston were just in regular supermarkets on the shelf with relishes.

When bf is visiting we must stop in The London Food Co. He says it's the only proper shop in my town.  They usually have the hard to find items.  Some of the things are expensive, but sometimes there is no substitution.  Although it's in NJ, they do ship!

I'm in MA and my local Shaw's had a better selection than the Stop and Shop, but I tend to alternate between there are some things Shaw's has that Stop and Shop doesn't and vice versa. They do have quite a good selection though. The tea is no problem, I bought an 80 pack of PG Tips for Lee when he visited in December and they usually have Lyons and some other good brands in the British and Irish foods section. I know they have some British jams, but can't remember quite what.

Others beat me to it, but I was going to mention that you won't have a hard time finding a lot of what you'll miss.  The combination of being near a large city and British foods becoming more known in the US means you'll find some of your favorites in most supermarkets.

Plus, Boston's gotta have at least one British shop somewhere!

I took lemon curd back when i went to visit in November, and my mom looked at me like  ??? .

Later she showed me lemon curd on the shelves of every supermarket we went to.
Oh well, it was a nice thought!
But apparently, even in Texas, they already have it.  :-\\\\

In DH 3.5 years in the USA he missed things like Cadbury's choccie bars and crisps and back bacon.  Truth be told it will be hard to tell what each person will miss.  I found that strange cravings for food would emerge at random times.

Treacle Pudding in a tin (really not that good and we never eat it here)... um ... I had to figure out how to make Jam Roly Poly...

Still most things you can get in the USA for a price.  Some are at your local shops and others you just have to order.  We found Danish back bacon at Whole Foods.

We used to buy Sharwoods chutney and Korma, but these things you can buy at your local Indian shop.

When you are away from home, even things you thought you'd never miss you miss.

We also used to get PG tips... it's the only tea we really drink, but we were lucky as they sold it on the Air Base and mom and dad could get it.

My mom likes Bisto.

All these things are available though in the USA... it just depends on the price.

Actually, I had a bit of a laugh after I made this post because I was fishing through my Betty Crocker or my Better Homes and Garden cookbook and I found a totally easy recipe for lemon curd.  I guess it isn't unique, but I don't remember seeing it much in the states.  Maybe I'll make it for Christmas for friends.
