wit's end...
« on: February 23, 2004, 09:11:42 PM »
First of all, I'm new (been lurking) and really excited to find this website.

My husband British and we currently live in Mississippi.  We would like to move back as soon as possible but we are stuck between a rock a hard place.

I put off finishing university so that we could get married (and meet the financial requirements for him to move here).  We are now desperately unhappy here and want to move back to the UK.  Has anyone tried to go to university in the UK?  I've looked all around and keep trying to phone UKCOSA and e-mailed every organization I can think of to see if I would qualify as a "home student" with my 2 year leave to remain.

I am utterly at my wit's end.  We can't move if I can't go to school there and I can't go to school there if I have to pay international rates.

If anyone knows/has experience/advice/anything, please help!!

Thank you so much and I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong place....

I haven't any experience with UK schooling but I'm sure someone here can help you out. Check out the Student section (can't remember the exact title)!

Welcome and good luck!  :)

thanks for the reply!

I have checked the student section.  Unfortunately, I can only seem to get advice for people who want to go to the UK JUST for university--none for people who are already there.

Thanks again!

Hi and welcome.  It sounds as if you are really struggling at the moment.  I am so sorry to hear it.

As for stdying here with home fees-it is tricky but not impossible.  Technically you are supposed to have been normally resident in the UK for three years prior to enrollment to be considered a home student.  However, there are ways around it.  By EU law you are entitled to the same rights as your husband, thus you should be eligible for home fees.  Someone on this forum knows more about this (but I can't remember who)  Also some uni's don't check.

There are some uni's that it doesn't matter.  the Open University is a distance learning uni that offers many degress by distance learning.  It is very reputable and their courses are resonable and you can pay monthly installments.  They also accept a transfer of credits towards one of their degrees which is useful if you have prior credits.

Any way good luck and welcome to UKY!

thanks for the warm welcome!

I did spot some posts on the student area--sorry.  Thanks for the assistance and I will post the answer if I find one.  I think I am going to try to contact a solicitor in the UK to find out for sure.

Thanks again!--Trisha
