Illegal to mail passports from one country to another?
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:42:38 AM »
Hello. I've got a question. My husband said he heard it was illegal to mail passports from one country to another as it violates some kind of immigration laws? Does anyone know if that is true?

If so, can i just bring a notarized copy of his passport and work permit so that I can send in my application for a non-settlement dependent visa?

Thank you.

It's not true- people do it all the time (even the US Embassy in London!)
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

We did it when I was applying for my spousal visa in Chicago.  After we got married DH had to go back to the UK and he mailed his passport back to me. When I took it to the British consulate I even told them he had mailed it to me.  The only thing they said was "ooo, bit risky, isn't it?" But that was it.

The only thing that would be illegal would be to send your passport to the US for processing while you were actually in the UK.  Sending his passport is fine.

I'll bet they meant it was risky to mail it.

Yeah, that's how I took it.   I would have thought think they would have told me otherwise
