Sour mix for margaritas?
« on: March 28, 2007, 04:43:47 PM »
I've found tequila, think I should be able to find triple sec, and have no clue where to find sour mix.  Help please!

Couldn't you use something like lemonaid?  If there is something like a limeaid that would probably work too--but I've never looked for it, so it may not exist!

It's not available here, except one or two odd places.  I think I saw it at Rosslyn Deli.  We asked a mexican barman how to make proper margaritas and he said to use fresh lime juice and a little sugar. It tastes much better than margarita mix!

I often make Margaritas, but have never used sour mix. I'm not even sure what's in sour mix! I use tequila, Cointreau (or triple sec) and fresh lime juice. If you like your drinks sweeter, you can add some simple syrup, but I'm partial to the plain old classic Margarita.

You bellowed?  ;)

Yes, you can make Margarita mix with fresh lime juice, sugar and water.  Couldn't tell you the exact measurements as I do it by taste, but I do heat the water and sugar together to make simple syrup, then mix it with fresh lime juice (with its pulp) to taste.  You are looking for enough sugar to cut down a bit on the tartness.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

I haven't had a margarita since I was in America.  I miss them :(

Maybe I'll make some this weekend :)

I will try the fresh lime juice.  Limeaid margaritas are yuck I think.  I'm spoiled being from Texas where every resteraunt practically has a margarita machine.

I was going to show yall the mix I was talking about and I found some:

Oh and I guess I'll add while we are on the topic that I requested a margarita from an American resteraunt and I felt like a celebrity because the bartender brought it to me and eagerly awaited my approval.  He did great.  I forgot to ask him how he made it.  He did say that the "slush" (I think he used the word slush) machines have started to catch on a little in the UK as of about three years ago.  I haven't seen one yet, but I only get to enjoy a drink here or there.

I use Rose's Lime Juice Cordial.  They slip down quite nicely.   ;)

I don't think it would occur to me to order a "slushy" Margarita! I prefer mine on the rocks!  :)

Ditto! Margaritas on the rocks are about the only liquor-based drink I like. I don't like the slushy ones! I'm a Guinness and whiskey girl, though!   ;D

When we had friends over for tacos on Sunday my husband made not only lime margaritas but also hibiscus (flor de jamaica) ... those were divine!
