Rice Krispie Treats and Golden Graham Smores
« on: February 26, 2004, 05:46:11 AM »
Maybe a silly question, but I didn't look closely enough the last time I was in ASDA and Sainsbury's cereal aisle.  Do they have Rice Krispies there?  I want to make some for Steven when I'm there in March, but wasn't sure if I should bring them with me or just get them there.

Also, wanted to make some Smore's treats using Golden Grahams...do they have those there?  I know they have Cinnamon Toast Crunch (but is called Cinnamon Grahams), but do they have just the plain Golden Grahams?

I think I'll have to bring marshmallows with me...or have you all been able to locate them easily?

They have both Rice Krispies and Golden Grahams (Yum!).

I am not sure about the marshmallows though.

There are a type of marshmellow, but not *quite* the same as what you're used to. In other words, they'll work, but not perfectly. However, I have seen American-style marshmellows available in the American import stores here, so not impossible to get with a little legwork.

Hmm...good point, Lisa.  Think I will just bring those over as well, as I wouldn't want the recipe to be ruined on the account of bad marshmallows then have him complaining that it's another crappy American treat or that I can't cook. Aww, that's such a nice thing to make!  :) I love those things. They do have the pre-made wrapped ones in the UK, last time I checked, but obviously they aren't half as good as homemade.

I'm glad they have rice krispies in the UK. Mmmmm. Good stuff.  :P

I do like the pre-made ones that have caramel in them...they were difficult to find in the US, but seem to be easier to find here!

The marshmallows here in the UK are kinda gooey where in the states they are sorta dry and powdery.

Sorry I didn't see your post otherwise I would have responded sooner.  Anyways, I'm not sure what the exact recipe is for it, as it's something they make at my school but here's the gist.  You take a regular baking pan (like a 9 x 11 or whatever) and grease it down.  In a bowl, mix melted chocolate and the Golden grahams together till the cereal is coated.  Toss in some marshmallows and then spread out the mix in the pan like you would with Rice Krispies Treats.  I think they use semi-sweet chocolate, but you could use melted chocolate chips or whatever type of chocolate you like that melts well.

Sorry that it's not exact, but I'm kind of guessing based on having looked at them and eaten them. :-/  Just a tip, but these things spread out easier if you use wax paper to spread them out....put the mix in the pan and then put a piece of wax paper on top then mush, mush, mush.  No gooey hands...unless of course you like gooey hands. ;D

Oh almost forgot, don't completely melt the marshmallows down, just get them a little gooey (the warmed chocolate will do this, you don't need to melt them down separately with extra heat).
