"Sucking Fingers"
« on: February 27, 2004, 12:13:30 PM »
Hi there,

Okay, does any one know why the British suck their fingers between and after meals?

I find that absolutely disgusting! Is it just me or am I being intolerable?

I've never seen my husband or his family or our friends suck on their fingers - at any time.

I don't suck my fingers during or after dinner (that would be nasty) but I do enjoy sucking other people's fingers, especially if they've ordered something different from the menu. It's like getting two meals for the price of one!

I've never seen anyone in Britain do this either, unless they are really drunk, and even then I think that might be a universal slob thing. Wondering where you've seen this...
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

So do you guys/gals think it's gross?

I have to admit that my hubby did it a couple of times during our meal at home and I said "ewww, please don't do that!"  He said that the British do that.

My step-daughter is 15 and she does it too ...sometimes not all the time during a meal at home.  Do I tell her not to do it too?  OMG  it sooooo bugs me!

I saw one of the characters on Eastenders do it and hubby said see us Brits do that.

I still think it is bad etiquette...agree or disagree?

I think it depends on what you're eating, really.  I mean, KFC built their reputation on being "Finger Lickin' Good"!   ;)

I definitely think it's gross, and I think most of the British population would agree!  I haven't noticed anyone doing this here, I have to say.

Just a word to the wise, caligirl....these British guys will try to blame *everything* on "that's just the way we do it here!" thinking you don't know any different.  But that's what we're here for!  We'll set ya straight, hon.  ;)

And I wouldn't look to Eastenders as a reference point....don't get me started on that show!!    :-X

Hmn I think I'll be sitting waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up the other end of the table from you two in future!

I think it's pretty gross and the worst display I have EVER seen was from my old boss who wasn't English but is from New Zealand so don't be blaming us Brits thank you. It was at a very expensive lunch with VIPs we were supposed to be impressing I was flabbergasted when she slowly sucked all 10 fingers and thumbs in front of the whole table. I just wanted to slide under the table!

But if they're your fingers, that's okay, Wishstar!   [smiley=love.gif]

I mean - it's okay for you and Mister Nibbles... :-*

No offence taken at all Caligirl I should have out a smiley face on that  ;D. Ha, you are another California-Brit couple, my husband is from Orange County. Nope my boss was not from the UK originally, she was only working over here for a few years. I don't get the finger sucking either really I mean ok if you've got a bit of sauce or somthing stuck there you might give it a quick lick to get rid of it but as a habitual thing and all fingers? bleuch.

Um Becca and Hamish could you save the finger sucking til well AFTER dinner when we go to Chillis thanks ! :)
