Christmas not starting until after Thanksgiving: It hits the shops in September here.

You have been away from the US for a while.  Christmas hasn't started until after Thanksgiving since I was a kid.  If it waits until after Halloween people wonder what's up.
On s'envolera du même quai
Les yeux dans les mêmes reflets,
Pour cette vie et celle d'après
Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.

I think that movie was "The Wrong Box", Jewlz.   ;D (Just saw it again on TV -- very funny -- but it had a lot of hysterical stuff with those carriages and the undertakers in tall hats)

I would add to your list:  toasted tea cakes.

Ooooh, will have to check out that movie! The first time I saw that thing I thought I was dreaming!  :o  And I love toasted tea cakes, hot cross buns, and all other manner of baked goods here. So good.

This thread has really been so great to read for me.   I am in a situation where I am moving to the UK bc my hubby (British) is not being allowed in the USA.   His Visa request was denied ... over something childish and stupid I might add ---> damn immigration.   Anyway .... because of all these circumstances in the last few months, our plans have changed completely and I am moving there, I would say in a few months.  I have been there and LOVED what I saw ... but that was to visit.   Living there is(was) a whole new feeling and I have had been nervous some days more than others BUT BUT BUT these posts have been amazing and have sparked a new excitement for me to get my butt to England and my wonderful husband!

I'm English, and after reading this thread I feel like there is so much I have just not appreciated. The saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side" has never felt more true. All the things people are listing here are things I can't ever remember thinking I like, or even having thought about. Thank you for waking me up to what my country has.

Reading these views from Americans, so many so positive, reminds me of something I have always regretted. I was on a train going into London from Kent a few years back. There was an elderly American couple sitting on my right and, behind them, two English youths. The boys began to smoke to which the Americans pointed out that there was no smoking on the train. In reply, the boys imitated American accents and swore at them. The way they said it was so malicious and unnecessary. I would give the clothes I'm sitting in and the computer I'm typing on to go back and tell those idiots to learn some manners and decency. I will never forget that I did nothing, even though it was a relatively small incident.

If you've ever been put down for being American, I would bet it's nothing more than jealousy or spite. I hope it doesn't change your view of the UK in its entirety.

We've always had a special relationship (besides the part where we were dictators and then you fought us off, but that's, erm, a long time ago) and for me, I will always feel a certain bond with Americans.

Good luck to you all.

Ben

Awww, thanks, Ben. What a nice post! Don't worry about those hooligans.... there are rude people no matter where you go, and most of us realise that and don't take these kinds of incidents too personally.

I'm sure there are things about the US that I took for granted or failed to appreciate as much as I should have. Most of the time it's easy to see the good aspects of a new place, but much harder to appreciate what has been in front of you all the while.  I'm glad our posts made you feel a bit happier to be in old Blighty.  ;)

What a nice post, Ben.  I also love to read through this thread and I prepare for my big move to the UK this summer.  It reminds me of all that I can look forward to.

Although it's wonderful to hear what you all have written about the UK, (I've read about 6 pages into the post) I will say I have a different view on it....

I am an American living in Germany -- long story, but for basically 12 years (minus 4)...

well, from a person who has lived on mainland europe for 12 years....

The UK is just a perfect setting for someone who is torn between the two countries... (whichever it may be!) I don't live there yet, but this is what I find great!

1.) My better half knows what Quaker Oats AND what Fairy liquid is!
2.) Walmart...  No other words needed
3.) Stores open on Sundays!
4.) Flights that only last 5 hours to get to my loved ones.

5.) An appreciationof both cultures.  .
6.( the cheeky forwardness of old men.  And the constant under-the-belt comments.  Although, I grew up in a very ethnic american culture, but it's still great to have that.
7.) Wine Circle!

Yep...ASDA/Wal-Mart.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASDA
Quote
Asda is a British supermarket chain which retails food, clothing, toys and general merchandise. They also have a mobile telephone network, called Asda Mobile.

Asda became a subsidiary of the American retail giant Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer,[1] in 1999,[2] and is the second largest chain in the UK after Tesco,[3] having overtaken Sainsbury's in 2003.

Asda's marketing promotions have usually been based solely on price, with Asda promoting itself under the slogan Britain's Lowest Priced Supermarket, 12 Years Running. As a wholly owned division of Wal-Mart, Asda is not required to declare quarterly or half-yearly earnings. It submits full accounts to Companies House each October.

1. I live in a decent town with a nice town center. Few chavs!
2. Find it easier to get a job here in the UK (er, at least once I get an interview) than I did in the US for some odd reason
3. My top five fav. stores: Marks and Spencer Food, John Lewis, Lakeland, Waitrose, and occasionally Sainsburys (Nectar points!!). I love M&S food so, so, so much.
4. My husband!
5. Gumtree. A place to meet people and learn new skills!
6. Japan Center. I don't live in London but I like to order from them.
