Confused about where to study??
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:13:26 PM »
Hi,

I am from New Jersey but moved to England with my parents when I was about four, so I have spend all of my life in English education. Now I'm 18 I have applied to many universitys in England and have narrowed it down to either studing at Winchester or Canturbury. My problem is that I feel that I really want to study in the U.S after visiting one of the universitys there and missing the U.S terribly ???. I was wondering if anyone on this website had been in this situation or if anyone had information on American universitys. Thanks! ;)

I haven't been in the same situation, but I know there used to be HUGE directories of all US universities and colleges you could buy in bookstores.  It gave stats about enrollment and majors and entry requirements.  I think they are now online...it was 10 years ago that I looked after all  ;)

Check out this site.  It has something specific for international students.

When you have narrowed down your search, I am sure there will be someone on this forum who is familiar with the school and will be able to give more detailed opinions.

It also really depends on what you're looking for in a campus. I've just transfered to Arizona State University, and the main campus is pretty nice but I've been having a really hard time with the administrative staff lately with my study abroad stuff. I think you'd experience that anywhere though. I would also consider that in the US it will take you 4 years for an undergrad and you'll probably be paying international tuition (depending on your situation), so it may be less expensive and quicker to stay in the UK for an undergrad. Have you considering doing an MA abroad instead? Keep in mind I am not trying to persuade you against US schools! Just wondering! It's also a good idea to narrow down where you might want to study based on climate and degree programs offered. Not all schools offer all degrees, so that's a huge concern too. I also agree on the Peterson's website.
CollegeBoard is also a good place to search around. http://www.collegeboard.com/

It would be so much cheaper to do your degree in the UK... I can't make any recommendations for a US university because there are so many and it really depends on what subject you intend to study, where in the US you want to be, and how much money you're prepared to spend.

I attended the University of Kent - Canterbury for one year as an exchange student in the mid 1990s and I had a great time. I'm sure it's changed since I was there but I enjoyed it.
