Ok, So this is a bump but...

I've spent a little time in new England, and had some mexican and I don't know if I just got unlucky, but I think I need to come visit cali or NM because I couldn't find much difference in the place I ate in (In CT) and the more authentic mexican places here!!

Anyone know anywhere in the New Haven or Hartford area where I can get awesome mexican so I can finally learn what I've been trully missing?

That's 'cause it's almost as hard to find decent Mexican in New England as it is in Old England!  (Take it from me - I'm from Georgia and my best friend/roommate when I lived in Boston is from San Diego - and is second-generation Mexican.)

If you're in CT again, head into the city and grab some food at Mary Ann's (2nd Avenue at 5th Street). :D  They do decent Mexican and excellent margaritas.

I agree--I lived in New York for about five months and never once found an authentic Mexican place.

My problem is that I am a total Mexican snob.  After being raised by my father from Southern NM, two years of living and eating every day with Mexicans, and having many Mexican friends, I couldn't even stand most American restaurants.  I always ate at taco wagons and the dives that most white girls wouldn't set foot in--and loved every moment of it.  For instance, I snatched up a pack of OEP corn tortillas when I finally found some after living here for over a year and looking everywhere.  I didn't look closely at the ingredients, but couldn't finish eating them when I bit into one.  I've never had corn tortillas with flour ever.  It was just hideous to me!

Thank heavens I learned how to cook much of my favourite stuff.  I just need to get myself a decent corn tortilla press now and some masa.  I make flour tortillas on a regular basis with beans and rice though.  Oh gosh, I'm getting hungry now.  :)

Tell me about it!  Growing up in San Antonio and then moving to New England was tough in terms of Mexican food.  Of course, four months before I moved, the BEST Mexican place opened within walking distance of my house.  The staff barely spoke English, were so incredibly polite, and the food was fantastic.  And then I moved to the UK.  Any Mexican I have had, I have cooked.  I have a pack of the Old El Paso corn tortillas in my cupboard, but, haven't tried them.  Now, I am not so sure.  The Old El Paso ones in the states were totally corn.  Sigh.
I am the architect of my destiny.

Seconded!!! I grew up in NM, and even California-style Mexican food was just wrong to me. And then I moved to upstate New York and Maryland.  :P

I've tried some Mexican here, and it's been scary for the most part. But I'm learning to cook more things, and homemade is awesome! I never cared all that much for corn tortillas until I made my own.

Get thee to mexgrocer.co.uk and buy a bag of masa and a tortilla press!!! Or have your mom bring you some when she comes. Seriously, homemade corn tortillas are not difficult, and they are SO good. Or come visit me, and I'll make you some. ;D

My tortilla press broke in the move.  :\\\'(  So, I do need a new one.  But, maybe I'll come visit you anyway.  :-\\\\

Don't eat them with the expectation that they're going to be like what you're used to.
They're definitely different, but they're nice!  They're like flour tortillas with more texture, and i've found i prefer them to flour.  :)

Northampton may be a bit too far up I-91, but there's Bueno y Sano...

That said, there's little difference really between New England cuisine and Olde England cuisine... most everything is boiled and the only way to eat 3 good meals a day is to have breakfast three times a day :D

Bueno Y Sano is eh.  Try La Veracruzana.  It is next door to the Jeffery Amherst bookstore in the centre of Amherst, MA.  There is one in Northampton too.

That is where I got my fix whilst at Uni!  ;D

I lived off Rafters and Wings over Amherst during my brief, undistinguished tenure at ZooMass...

Don't know if this place has already been mentioned (and obviously I am English so my knowledge of Mexican food is limited) but I went here http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/restaurants/restaurant-1698.php last week and it was fantastic!
