I need the extra support.  Both dh and I hate divans and we are tired of the mattress not having the support it needs on a regular bed and slides through the slat boards laid directly under the mattress.

Though i did find a wonderfully firm mattress at House of Fraser that would have been perfect if we had £1200!!!!

i use a regular mattress on a futon frame... i like my bed to be low to the ground.  I have had this same futon frame for over 10 years and it's very strong (it's from Futon Company).  I dont feel im lacking any support.

I had a futon bed from a futon specialist back home and I loved it! I also like my bed lower to the ground. For some reason I never liked the look of a box spring and mattress (weird I know). Maybe that is why I didn't miss not having a box spring over here.

The higher the bed, the happier I am! I love feeling like I'm way up high! It's nothing to do with comfort - just a psychological thing which, I realise, makes no sense. I have a high bed frame, a big box spring and a really deep mattress. I'm on top of the world!  ;D

Yeah me too.  I am pretty particular about mattresses.  Growing up my mom used to joke with me that I was like the princess in the story of the princess and the pea!

Isn't a box spring & mattress combination roughly equivalent to a Divan bed?  We have a single Divan in the spare room and a wooden frame bed with mattress on top in ours.  While the spare Divan is basically one unit instead of the separate box spring & mattress (and it has the draws in it) it seems like they are similar.  I haven't lived in the States for a while now so my memory isn't so good, maybe there are some major differences?
