i'm really sorry to hear about your dad.  good luck with the berevement fare- i think it really depends on whether you need a fully flexible ticket or not.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Thanks everybody for your kind words and advice.

I just booked my ticket on United for tomorrow morning: $1,113 RT.  United ticket agent was going to charge me the exact same fee, PLUS a $15 fee for booking by phone. So I just hung up and booked it online.   The change fee is only £50 so if I have to stay longer, not too big a deal.

I don't have any advice, I just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your father. That's horrible that United didn't work more with you.

Thanks everyone.

My father passed away Sunday, May 20.

I had spent two weeks back home in Washington with him, basically watching and waiting but finally had to return home for work. My father died four days after I got back to London.   And I can't afford to go back home again for the funeral, but at least I got to see him and say goodbye while he was still alive.

While I was in DC, I changed my return flight twice. United was completely unsympathetic; they charged me $250 each time I changed the ticket ($150 change fee plus difference of the new ticket fare). And all the direct flights back to London were full, so I had to fly from Dulles to Boston to Frankfurt to London.

Sorry to hear about your Dad but glad you got to see him for a bit.

Unfortunately, the airlines are just awful to deal with in situations like this. My mother was beside herself when I ended up in ICU after Sammy was born. It would have cost her $1000 to change her flight even though she had bought a flexible ticket. She wasn't able to be here and that just made things horrible for everyone involved.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
