Not being funny, but are you absolutely sure it was actually off or bad? I find that meat from a good butcher smells stronger than the sterilized stuff from a supermarket. Beef in particular.

i've noticed this as well... it could be a shock to someone who is used to buying supermarket meat.

Doesn't red meat look a bit brown if it's going off though?

The beef had a really "beefy" smell and tasted a bit weird.

The chicken smelled really nasty and I threw it out.

I would say the chicken was off for sure, but maybe the beef was just a stronger smell?  I don't know, but if that's how it is supposed to smell/taste I won't be buying it again.  DH wouldn't eat it.
