US vs. UK Cadbury
« on: May 09, 2007, 03:19:34 AM »
I saw Cadbury chocolate in the regular candy aisle at Stop and Shop. I have a bunch of Cadbury from the UK at home so wasn't planning to buy any, but I wanted to know if it was the same stuff. I looked at the wrapper and saw that the Cadbury Dairy Milks at Stop and Shop were made by Hershey.

I don't like Hershey. I like the Cadbury Creme Eggs from the US, but never looked to see if it was made in the US or UK. Now that it's not Easter anymore and I ate all the ones I got in the US, I don't know how to check.

My questions is this: Does anyone know if there's a taste difference between the US version of Cadbury and the UK version? I'm trying to decide whether I want to try the stuff made by Hershey.

DH hates Hersheys, won't touch it. He did eat his way through about 6 dozen cadbury eggs though and he thought they were just like English Cadbury. They are made here by Hershey though. Otherwise, the Cadbury here is basically Hershey choc with a different wrapper on it.

I used to live quite close to Bourneville (Cadbury Central), and I can totally tell the difference between English and American Cadbury. I can even tell the difference between Canadian/English/American Cadbury!

The Easter chocolates come closest in taste to English Cadbury, especially the Creme Eggs and Mini Eggs. For the regular bars, like Dairy Milk, you're just paying double the price for a Hershy bar.

BTW, if you're ever in the Midlands, I'd definitely pay a visit to Bourneville's Cadbury Chocolate world. They practically force feed you the entire tour, and when I was there, they had a chocolate Coronation Street!

I only like creme eggs, Dairy Milk is the only chocolate that always gives me heartburn.  Plus, I just don't think it tastes all that good.  Galaxy though is good and so is Lindt.

I'm wierd four!   ;)  Prefer american chocolate to UK.  I only really like the cadbury's caramel.

Are you sure that the cadbury in the states is actually made in the states?  A lot of times you find that for importation rules and regulations a company will have to have another company in which to ship it through.  This happens all the time with imported food into the UK.  Classic example here:  I work next door to a sweet shop that imports sweets and food items.  Some of the items are not allowed to be directly imported from the states into the UK.  They therefore have to go via another country (such as Germany) for some reason, before they can be shipped into the UK.  I had this discussion with the manager of the sweet shop once and he was telling me all this info. A lot of times if you simply look at the small printing on shampoos, food items, stationary, it will say for example, a product of Italy but packaged for XYZ company in XYZ county, UK.

Most Cadbury's in the US is made under license by Hershey's - and this is the stuff you will find in Stop & Shop etc.

This is so true.  Small independent food stores are the chocoholics friend: I've had some great finds and some very cheap UK chocs from the smaller stores  :D

Bizarrely, creme eggs are usually imported from the UK and therefore "safe" for non-Hershey lovers like me. That said, Cadbury's mini-eggs are made by Hershey and they are fanstastic and don't taste like Hershey at all. ???

I know! I think the American mini-eggs are actually better than the English mini-eggs. But, at least you can get the English ones year round.
