BBC Expose' of Scientology - Monday 14 May
« on: May 13, 2007, 05:45:22 PM »
For any of you who might be interested, disgusted and/or appalled by Tom Cruise's freaky & expensive 'religion' -- this BBC reporter's expose' of Scientology is airing tomorrow night:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6650545.stm

Having lived not far from Clearwater, FL before -- when I first moved to that area, it really freaked me out to see all these (small groups of) weirdos walking about downtown Clearwater. :P

Personally I think Hubbard knew what he was doing all along - kach-ing!
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

- from Anthem, by Leonard Cohen (b 1934)

I've always been dumbfounded that anyway could follow a religion started by a science fiction writer!

Didn't he start it as a bet that he could invent a new religion and get people to believe in it?

Did he? That makes it even worse. Tom Cruise has little scientology churches set on wherever he's filming. Can you imagine how much money that sham of a "religion" gets out of people like him and John Travolta? (Travolta is said to be pissed about the documentary. Cruise, for some reason, is keeping quiet.)

I believe he did.  I know he's quoted as saying "You want to know how to make a million dollars?  Start a religion."

I hope it's repeated, I'm always interested in this stuff!

(good informative article, carolyn, btw)

Me, too. I once started to go out on a date with a Scientologist after my boyfriend died, and he said I was "sick" to be on an antidepressant and that nothing but natural remedies worked. I got out of his car before we left my building (and he had seemed so  normal on the phone).

I was reading an article about this documentary. Apparently the journalist making it lost his ragwith them completely which is all on camera.  Someone from the Scientologists similarly lost the plot but the BBC has had to edit that out after they withdrew their consent to have that part shown.

Scientologtists never have rational beliefs behind their religion, which is probably why both sides went off.

Sorry. I forgot where this issue originally started. But it has to do with the BBC documentary tomorrow night.

It's too bad all the way around really.  Anyone trying to expose the dark side of Scientology, though has plenty of material, loses credibility if he/she loses his/her cool.

I saw a thing about this today on that program about religion on the BBC.  It was pretty interesting.  Apparently, they dogged this guy's every move, put him in a high stress situation and then interupted an interview he was doing by calling the interveiwee a pervert.  And he snapped.  It wasn't excusing his behavior, but put in context it was a different story.

It is now! ;)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
