I don't think biscuits taste anything like scones -- except cheese scones maybe.  If you went to ladle your cream (sausage or bacon) gravy over any old scone, you'd likely be in for a bizarre & rude awakening. :P

Great thread, chary! :)

I make my husband biscuits and gravy with any old scones (I mean ones bought at the supermarket, not home made) all the time and he loves it. Maybe that's just him though.

But most scones I've seen & consumed here (other than cheese scones) are sweet? ???

Don't even get me started about scones...I am addicted to them.  ;)  (I have never tried cheese scones though). My husband just called on his way home to pick anything up and I said all we need are banana's....I forgot the scones.

Actually that is probably a good thing....because they are high in calories.  :(...but I love them!

Sorry Helen! :-[

I'm wondering if the mods can take the scones v biscuits, I love scones, etc milieu away from this thread - pretty please? :)

LOL Jules - I'm not that keen on regular scones, but my MIL's cheese scones (a savoury thing) are to die for!

(US) Southern style biscuits are entirely a different thing though -- even the savoury scone doesn't have the same weight, texture, flakiness, etc as the biscuit.  It may be the closest British thing to a biscuit - close, but no cigar, 'er biscuit.

There was a bakery near where I worked in the US that made the best cheese scones. I used to stop off nearly every morning on the way in and pick up one with a bottle of Fresh Samantha 'Desperately Seeking C.' Untill I figured out how many calories I was consuming even before 9am!  :o

But, yes, cheese scones rock!

Cheese scones are good with that sort of white country gravy / sausage gravy.  :)

I'm with you, Carolyn- scones do not equal American southern-style biscuits, if you ask me.  In fact, I don't think there is a UK equivalent.  I do still like scones, though :)

I did that, but with lemon scones with lemon icing on them.  I would walk through the Harvard Science center every morning on the way to work and meet my colleague and chat over scones.  Never occured to me that they were so fattening. (I was young then, in my early 20's, so they did not effect me as badly as they would now)

(The Harvard Science Center has the best cafe with a Chic Fillet in it as well)

I was doing this in my mid-30s. Not such a good idea.  :-\\\\

I like scones too!  But biscuits they ain't.  And it's an idea (biscuits = scones) that other Brits (along with Britwife) I know seem to have -- Brits I work with who have been to the US & eaten real biscuits.  I think probably because it's the only thing here we have by which to try & describe (US) biscuits.

I'm sure that the country gravy would be good over cheese scones, as QG has mentioned.  And it may be as close as you're going to get to biscuits here, unless you make your own from scratch.

But no, no, no, no, no - scones are not biscuits. :P

Not even close!  I am a Southern girl, born and bred, and I love my biscuits.  I also adore scones.  But, they aren't even close!

And now I want biscuits and gravy...
I am the architect of my destiny.
