Credit cards - liablity limits if stolen?
« on: May 17, 2007, 03:45:05 PM »
In the U.S., you're not liable for more than $50 in charges if your credit card is stolen. Is the same true in the UK? I'm talking about the automatic protection you get for free, not the liability protections packages that cost extra.

There is a low limit, something like 50 quid but dont quote me on that.  However, note that this is for credit cards only, debit cards you are responsible for MUCH MUCH MORE!  Remember that the credit card has to be reported lost/stolen within a certain amount of time.

If you have a Home Insurance or a renter's insurance policy it may cover losses from credit and debit cards, check your policy wording.

That's why I never had a debit card in the U.S., I always refused one and the banks always seemed befuddled and would have to make a special request to get me just a plain ole ATM card. But a debit card was the easiest thing to get when we first got here. And I use it all the time in instances where in the U.S. I would've used a credit card (like for online purchases). I forgot that it's more vulnerable than a credit card. How do people protect themselves when using debit cards?

I've always found banks and credit card companies to be very helpful when cards are stolen or lost.  Make sure you have the relevant phone numbers with you at all times so that if you do lose them you can call to cancel them straight away.  You won't be liable for any expenditure which occurs on them after you have reported them.
