I do like banana's but I will say that some in the UK are not very nice. Why?...well my Brit co-worker told me about the difference. If a banana doesn't have a proper curve its not from the Caribbean or south/central America.

i've never seen a banana without a curve!

I love bananas - but only when they are lightly freckled.
If no freckles are on them they are not ripe enough for me.
If they get too ripe to eat I make banana bread - yummy!

I think bananas are fantastic.  Yellow is such acheery colour.
They even come in their own cute little package that is easy to zip right off!
One of Mother Nature's finest gifts, in my opinion  ;D

That's why I thought someone had mislabeled plantains.  They're like little straight bananas.

So the Fairtrade ones, are they the good ones or no?

I can't taste a difference. (And I like buying fairtrade)  I'll have to have a banana taste test I guess ;D

Stacey, interesting that you asked that because for the 1st time tonight the non curve banana's did have a fair trade sticker (we don't usually shop at Sainsbury's so this may be the norm there) it did make me wonder where they were from?

I have seen the non curvy ones in the past but didn't see the free trade sticker prior to this evening (usually no label). That said, I would imagine that fair trade would be for the countries/areas's that I mentioned, I guess that is not the case. Not sure...very confusing.  ;) All I know is curvy (with a label that I know) vs. non curvy and there is a distinct difference in taste.

Fungirl, you may have a point but these "not so nice" banana's were in the banana section.

What are plantains and what are they used for? (Probably a stupid question).  ???

Plantains are nice, but they have to be cooked.  Raw... no way.

I was thinking someone in the store may have misplaced them.  Possibly?

Thanks Jules.  I think in Sainsbury's they have only recently started having the fair trade bananas, so that might be why. (They had them before, just usually in a bag)

Plantains are yummy.  They are usually cooked fried (In slices) or mashed.  We always have them in Puerto Rico when we go.

Thanks...that is probably what I was trying to say....curvey banana's have a sweetness and by looking at the banana's in the picture even though a bit spoiled they are long without a curve. So it seems from time to time you do see those marketed as banana's when they are really plantains...like the ones in our fruit bowl tonight! Oh well, my husband will enjoy them.  ;)

I guess my Brit co-worker thought they were from the EU....I will let him know on Monday.  :) At least now I understand the difference.

I'm not much of a banana fan at all. I'll eat them, but only if they're at the perfect stage of ripeness, which is still a touch green. After they get brown spots, forget it. I like banana bread but only if there are no slimy brown chunks of banana--they have to be completely mashed. I won't touch anything else with banana: I loathe banana chips with a passion, and banana flavoring makes me sick to my stomach. Even the smell of banana candy or gum makes me feel slightly ill.

Yes, I have serious banana issues!  :P

You're not the only one! I'm the exact same way with bananas.

I don't like peaches much, but like the canned ones.  ???

I've only had friend plantains, one of my African kids brought it in for her cultural presentation this winter. They were ok, they were pretty sweet.

Dh loves bananas, can eat them by the bunch. Me, not so much.

Unless we're talking about chocolate-covered frozen bananas.  ;D

Wasn't the curved banana a problem for the EU? I do like bananas in sandwiches and in Well's Banana bread beer, i'm a sucker for real ale

I loathe bananas and so does DH. Ick. They're slick and sort of pasty they have little strings down the sides. I don't even like the smell!

I can only eat bananas when they are green, just about to turn yellow.  Too yellow or brown spots are definitely a no no IMO.

I love banana candy though (mmm banana laffy taffy!!)

I am more of a berry girl..blueberries and strawberries are my fav!!

I like them but they have to be just a tad green to eat plain. I also like them in cakes, pies, bread but am not overly fond of artificial banana flavored stuff like candy.

I also like peaches but really don't like the skin. My cousin described that as biting into a rug!! I far prefer nectarines. I really crave those and blueberries. But a blueberry, nectarine, and banana fruit salad is wonderful. Add some cantaloupe and I'm in heaven!

I find most apples in the supermarkets awful now. In the US they are WAY too big and here they are bland. I only eat Granny Smiths unless I can get good apples at the organic markets.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I take the strings off before I eat mine! I don't like the stringy bits!   [smiley=bleck.gif]

I do, however, adore plantains! Yum! Fried with just a bit of salt sprinkle on them ... mmmmmm!
