Spices
« on: March 05, 2004, 12:44:38 AM »
I was told that as of three weeks ago that the US government is requiring moving companies to pack all of your stuff now.  They do not want any "self pack" items.  Which throws a wrench into my idea of taking my spices in amongst my kitchen items.  So any other thoughts or can I just get them over there or a good palce to buy them online?

you can get large quantities of any spice used in curries and some you may never have heard of in any indian market.  we would get big bags of cumin, mustard seed, tumeric, garam masala, etc. for something like 60 pence, whereas here it is $3 for one of those little jars in the grocery store.

sometimes it takes some hunting to find a place like that though - i was in colchester for 7 months before a friend tipped me off to this little tiny shop that looked like any other news agent that had a secret stash of bags and bags of cheap spices.

I didn't bring any spices with me when I moved and I've yet to have any trouble finding anything I wanted.  I wouldn't recommend bringing them if it is going to be a hassle.

I believe that consignments into the US can contain dried items, including spices. I intend on taking mine as I have an extensive collection.

You should check first with your moving company.

The spices in the UK are much cheaper in ethnic shops than they are in the US. You can get some exotic things for small amounts of money. I am not bringing them myself but only because Kevin is a great cook and has all the spices I need.

With that said, the only things I plan to bring over are things like Mrs. Dash blends, Old Bay Seasoning and other blends not sold in the UK. I'm not sure if I can get lemon pepper in the UK.

Doreen, I havent seen lemon pepper in spice form before. Ive seen liquid and paste seasonings for meat but you might be better off bringing a good supply if you cant live without it :)

Vnicepeeps, at the time I posted before I didnt realize you were going TO the UK so my post was a bit out of place really. I just wanted to ask - how can the US government demand that all OUTGOING domestic shipments be professionally packed? Seems like that would be up to the UK. It just feels unusual to me, thats all. Where did you find this info? I might be helpfull to other UK bound peeps.

You can't bring spices? Oops. :-[

I usually make sure I'm stocked up on pure vanilla extract. I haven't scoured the shelves lately, but I only recall seeing imitation vanilla flavoring here.

Ive searched all over for Anise oil (not essential oil but stuff that you can cook with) and havent found it once. So if you like anise cookies or candy and you make it yourself, be sure to bring a stockpile with you!
